"Stepped Mic"

Hi guys,

my friend is writing her doctoral thesis and she is describing the music genre "Industrial". She stumbled upon the term "stepped mic" as something that is characteristic for the genre.

I am by no means omniscient, so I have never heard of a "stepped mic" and even google won't find anything useable (except stepped mic preamps) where I also don't have any idea what they are.

Do you guys know?

Strange term...
Maybe it means any effects, similar to trancegate on vocals?

But it not popular effect in industrial music. More likely, it concerns to Trance, Goa and other psychedelic electronic music.
