What do you guys like to use for that heavily compressed stereo drum room. From what I've read it's usually LDCs.

i like dynamic mics for roomsounds, they sound less hi-fi and you get less cymbal hiss in them. using 421's mostly

57's or ribbons. I find myself having to filter out a ton of High frequency content when i use condensors.
Wow, that's really funny that you guys use ribbons or even dynamics for a room sound - I've never room mic'ed before, so I wouldn't know, but it never would've occurred to me to use anything but condensers
I used 121's over the weekend and they still seemed to have picked up a loooot of the high end on the cymbals.

Ribbons do the job VERY well, handling compression and EQ very well. They will bring that low-mid fatness without getting too much cymbal hiss. "Dark" LDC work too, and dynamic mics of course.

I've never had much luck with room mics....until I got my Studio Projects C4's. Using a pair of them with the omni capsules gave me that "wow" factor. Nice smooth top & that 'slammin' sound.
Condensers aren't necessarily bad... ...it's just that the cardioid pickup pattern tends to boost the highs. Try out some omnis... you should be surprised.

How do you find those C4s as overheads Oz? I've got some ATM450s that I like but it's always nice to have a variety... I know you had ATM450s as well, how do the C4s compare to those for overhead applications in your opinion?

Well, I've still got the C4's don't I? I thought the ATM450 was far superior as an acoustic guitar mic than an overhead.
The C4's are very nice as overheads. I just want the chance to record a stoner band so I can use them as spaced omni OH. BIG, BIG sound.
