Hello

When you do the stereo pair overhead technique, do you angle the mics away from the snare or towards it ?

as in / \ or \ /

Also do you follow the 3:1 rule when doing overheads ?
Last, anyone got some great pictures of a stereo pair setup ?.. the ones I have found on google dont really show it to well :|

It depends if you mean to pick up the snare or not, and the pickup pattern of your mics. If you are using directional mics, you can lessen the pick up of the snare of you angle them away.

I personally mic overheads like the following diagram

Kit%208.gif

I use cardioid mics, pointed straight downward.

depends really.
normally if i want more cymbal, I angle them away from the kit forwards as opposed to sideways does that make sense?

I always aim for cymbal separation when i mic up the overheads, i dont care about centering the snare i always compress it with sidechain in the mix. Have been quite successful lately Where i've been having about 2-3db difference from Left cymbal/mic to the right microphone. Does it make sense to you?? haha

If you use Melodeath picture one, and then I move the left microhphone to the center of the 2 cymbals and the right one in the center between the right cymbal and hihat (or perhaps a little bit closer to the cymbal) I usually mic it soomewhere between 30-40cm from the cymbals, so it is more of a close mic setup.

Here is an example 85 L/R, no automation, what you here is "real" separation between the microphones: www.studiohaga.net/agendas.mp3
