Steven Wilson Interviews Mikael

Actually, I hadn't seen that interview yet, so thanks for posting it. I have seen a clip obviously from that same setting where Steven SMOKES Mike (sorry buddy! lol) in the Prog Rock quiz, though!

It was actually a great interview that corresponds well to some of the other threads going on currently, particularly the "I think I found what's wrong with Watershed" one. The part where Steve & Mike are talking about albums that demand a lot from the listener that you may not even like at first, but are facinated enough by them to want to give them a few more listens, at which point you finally start to "get it". Particularly interesting was their mention of Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica, which is a great example of a demanding, yet ultimately rewarding record to those with the patience to understand it. (I loved Steven's line about... "the first time I listened to it, I was like 'What the fuck is going on here?' " Pretty much everyone's initial reaction! lol)

Anyway, it's always cool to listen to those two talk shop any time the opportunity arises.

What the fuck is wrong with people putting background music in mediocre interview recordings? I hate that. There's actually background music from the pub and the Opeth tracks in the background... Good watch apart from that though.

Agreed, that's distracting and annoying as hell!

Hadn't seen it, background music is pretty annoying. Buffering was shit, but it ended up playing at 666kbs at second Lolz metUL! Christ it must take a while for SW to get smashed, he's really nursing that beer. He even goes back to the empty glass to delay getting another .

I've always sensed a building animosity between Mike and Steve in part 1.
Listen to Steve: he keeps pushing Mike to basically say that Opeth is no longer a metal band.
You can just hear Mike's shackles rising at that remark...
Or is it just me

Just sounds like a couple of buds fucking with each other to me. No one can get under your skin like one of your boys!

Cool interview.
In the beginning you can indeed feel how Mike didn't want to loose the "metal tag" as part of Opeth's identity
(which I feel has happened with WS though...)

Who cares?

Cool interview though, thanks for posting.

I'll be flamed and burnt at the stake for this but i'm going to say it.

Personally, I feel that Opeth aren't a metal band. They have dissolved and erased all strings that define and govern popular/underground culture today. Yes, even metal is popular culture as underground as it may seem.
Opeth, to me, have taken music, songwriting, production, presentation, etc to the next level. Assisting Opeth in this direction are bands like Tool, Porcupine Tree, A Perfect Circle, Nevermore, etc.

A band like Opeth, and the others mentioned, is a once in a lifetime conjuring. They are here to turn (bang) heads and elevate serious music lovers to a state of delirium.

Thanks for the music, Opeth :kickass::kickass::kickass:
