Anyone recommend any particular brands (or gauges) of strings to tune a 5 string bass down 2 full steps to C tuning?

Also, any tips for setting up the bass in order to still have decent string tension?

remove the low b and either buy a set of 6 strings or if you can then get a high c which are 30's .tune E A D G C .i didnt make any adjustments to my trusrod..nothing happened.I however changed back to Low B as i prefered that to the high C

He means tuning it up from BEADG to CF#A#D#G#. I think. Correct?

if so, just get slightly looser strings - instead of a .130-.105-.85-.65-.45 set, try maybe a .125-.100-.80-.60-.40 set, or something of the like.

Buy a Dingwall Bass. The fanned fret system is great.

As for strings, i would suggest looking at Conklin strings.

I beleive that is the website, you can order individual strings made for tuning to a low F#. I think the gauge is something like 175 or something like that. That would be your best bet for getting decent tension out of a normal bass, but the low G will probably still sound shitty.

Thanks for the tip...

If I went with the 175 string, should I just replace the 130 in a five string set and use something like 45-65-85-105-175 or should I throw away the smallest (45) string and try to shift the others to be 65-85-105-130-175?

Also, any recommendations as to Stainless vs. Nickel, Roundwound vs. Flatwound and Hex Core vs. Round Core?

Thanks again!

I would suggest trying out different combinations to see what you like. As far a nickle vs. steel, its all personal preferance.

I would try something like 175-130-105-85-65. Definitely try to get hex core strings, as they are slightly tighter than a round core. I'd go for stainless steel roundwounds - it's personal preference, however I believe stainless steel have a brighter sound for longer than nickels before they die.
