I've been wondering,

what's the optimal distance between (passive) pickups and the strings. I've read that the closer the pickups are to the strings the hotter the signal is, but it might get muddy. I'm looking for that perfect inbetween. I've been messing around slightly but i haven't really noticed any difference so far (i just tried a bit)

Raise the pickup till you start to hear the notes make a wawawawawa sound then back it off till it stops. Thats precise pickup placement. The wawawawawa sound is the pickups magnet pulling on the string attempting to stop it from vibrating.
