Stupid question about multi tracking

How do u dual or quad track a guitar part do you actually play it 2 or 4 times. Or so u use the same recording and record it on another track

Separate performances each time, if you copy and paste all you're doing is making it louder. It's the subtle differences in playing each time that make it sound huge
