That should be your first order of business.
A cheap set of monitors in a treated room will sound better & let you mix more accurately than an expensive set in an untreated room.

i just built bass traps out of 4"mineral fiber board and some fabric and they work really good. four traps, about $60.00 and as good as any auralex. alot of the companies do the same thing. owens corning 705 or 703 wrapped in fabric. then they charge a ton. you can diy fo alot less. but yeah treating your room should be first order of business so when you audition monitors you can choose more wisely.
