Superior 2.0 just arrived ...

Hey Guys. here's a 1:30 sec sample I've had on my computer for a few weeks using DFHS 2.0

Only used the Sonalksis plug-ins on this. No post work, tried to do as many cymbals as possible and some hihats and did many tom hits at the end. This is ONLY one sample (so many variations with 2.0) :kickass:

So you can do completely random stuff with it and make it your own? I'm used to using drum maps in Cubase, can I still use them and have the drums sounding this good? (Sorry, I'm new to this whole software approach)

If I understand your question correctly - yes, you can do completely random stuff (such as kit pcs, variations of grooves, built in effects, etc) to make your own sound, etc.

If you are new to the software approach - you may be a little overwhelmed. That's ok, though. There are a lot of people on this forum who are more than willing to help you out.

Not to mention - you could always visit us over @ the ToonTrack forum, too.

There are a lot of guys over there that use Cubase & Nuendo that could help you with a blindfold on their eyes!

Enjoy.

I know absolutely nothing about these programs, and I've never used a program like this before, but I seriously need to buy one. I think I'm gonna buy EZDrummer and DFH soon, these things sound amazing for pre-programmed stuff!

The only thing I don't get is the groove thing. I need to make my own original drum tracks though, so I don't know how it works. Are there any sort of trial versions of it I can try?

Don't! I have EZDrummer and DFH and the kicks and snares are really bad, incredibly thin. Its almost impossible to get a decent sound out of it. The Toms and Cymbals are very nice though. I have just picked up a cheap copy of the original DFHS, as I've always been impressed with the sounds people get out of it. Nothing I have heard or seen has *yet* persuaded me that there is any reason to buy S2.0 over the original, except the Sonalkis plugs. The fact that the metal kits will just be re-released versions of DFHS seems to defeat the point of upgrading to S2.0 imo, I'll save my cash for something else.

The deal with the pre-made Grooves in EZDrummer, and in the expansions, is that you can drag them into your project from the EZD GUI and then you will have the MIDI for that groove on your MIDI track. You can then open the event and edit the hits using the Drum Editor as if you programmed it yourself. I do this alot myself so that a lot of the stuff is already done. I then go back and change the parts I want to be different. Basically, getting the foundation of all the beats I'm going to use from the pre-made Grooves then going back and shaping it into what I really need. Saves quite a bit of time for me actually.

Also...yeah, the drums in EZD (kicks and snares) are quite thing sounding, so I usually end up replacing them. HOWEVER!!! I just got the Nashville expansion for EZD and holy shit...believe it or not, I have gotten a great all natural sound (no samples blended in) with the Nashville drumset for metal. I like it alot more than any of the other sets for EZD. I have the Pop/Rock (default) kit and DFH EZX...whenever I used either of those the snare and kick would always get replaced. The toms on the pop/rock/dfh kits are fine, and the cymbals in the DFH kit are fine, it's just the kick and snare. But the Nashville EZX...seriously, I was completely surprised but the samples actually have BODY for once.

That's all super cool stuff, thanks guys. I had a bad experience using 'Apple Loops' when I was messing around with Garageband when I first got my Mac, and I was paranoid that this would just be a better sounding version of that.

I appreciate the help offering on behalf of everyone else, Waterboy! I'll check out those Toontrack forums, if I go that route. the EZD/DFH approach is not sounding overwhelmingly great though, at the moment. It is damn cheap, though.

006, I think I understand the whole concept of Grooves now, then! Any idea if other software will work the same way, XLN Addictive for example?

Exactly the same here, I find something that approximates what I hear in my head and then edit it. I'm pretty sure that via EZplayer Free I can still use the MIDI grooves that come with EZD/DFH in DFH Superior (different drum map by all accounts).

How much does superior 2.0 cost? I just bought an old DKFHS copy from a buddy, is it worth looking into 2.0?

Also, I'm scared that my sounds are gonna be total crap from Superior. Any resources I should check that explain how to get started?

Are there any places I can find a good beginners guide to superior? I just opened it up and have no idea what I'm doing.

Not to mention - if you are using Cubase, Superior does all the work for you (practically).

I recall when I used to use Cubase SX3, that was one of the things I was blown away by - especially because in ProTools & Logic you had to route the Multi-Channels, etc. - whereas in Cubase it just popped up like magic

You'll be fine. The suggestions thus far have been good ones, too.
