If you like "Odyssey", you should get "Divine Wings of Tragedy" right away, another masterpiece of progressive Metal :headbang:
Absolutely!!! Divine Wings Of Tragedy is my favorite SX album. But, as it goes with musically strong bands, all their stuff is excellent!!! :worship:

I agree on Divine Wings, this album is a must-have.

Good thing you're getting in Symphony X cause they deserve a lot more attention on the metal scene.

If you have the opportunity, go see em live, they are awesome.

I like the "The Oddyssey" a lot! It's the only album I have of theirs. I'll look for "Divine Wings of Tragedy" too.

Thanks! I'll be sure to check it out. :)

Symphony X is one of my favorite bands. I would say I like them just as much as Nevermore. COB comes right behind those two. But I love Symphony X and progressive metal in general. Although I am somewhat disspointed by the latest DT releases.

If you get the chance go and see Symphony X live. I have seen them 5 times and they get better every time. Russel Allen is a fantastic vocalist.

The Divine Wings is indeed a absolute classic. But I also love Twilight in Olympus and the fantasic "V: The New Mythology Suite". That last album is a symphonic masterpiece. A concept album with a lot of symphonic influences. If you are into that kind of stuff you will love it.

Another really fantastic band is Zero Hour. They are more in the technical vein. Imagine the riffs of Fear Factory with a very high quality singer [John Arch/Dio], complicated songs with just a few leads. If you would like this style, and only if you like it, I can highly recommend "The Towers of Avarice" from Zero Hour. One of the best albums I ever heard! And alas, an underground classic.

I have seen them twice and they are also great live. Besides that there a great bunch of people :)

Symphony X is an elite band. They actually performed "The Odyssee" at Prog Power USA IV and did it flawlessly. They are on a short list of bands that can nail their music live to a degree that is near perfection.

My fav band, Vanden Plas is much the same way. Overlooking the fact I am biased, at PP IV they also peeled the paint off the walls with perfectionism. They even nailed those difficult harmony vocals on "Nightwalker" like they were just singing in the shower. At 35 years old and after seeing many many many concerts, usually if I am really looking forward to a particular band I get disappointed, but that didn't happen with Vanden Plas. You could have parked a car in my mouth during their first couple of songs.

Pagans Mind wasn't far behind either. They were openers and even all of the "weird vocal noises" Nils makes.. he could imitate live pretty fucking well.

I didn't mean to turn this thread into a Prog Power IV thread, but the Symphony X post made me think about the quality of those three bands live.

Yeah, The Odyssey is definately a strong album. I bought it on a whim a while back and liked it. I'll be checking out more of their stuff.
The funny thing about SX to me is that they are one of the few bands I WANT to get softer at least on a couple of songs a release. Russell Allen is one of the best singers in metal period and when he does a ballad like "Accolade II" or "Communion and the Oracle" (which is off of "V") it blows me away. I don't want a whole disc of power ballads, but as good as they are at it, two or three on a disc as opposed to the obligatory one would rule.

Very well put! I am in complete agreement.
