It's alright. It's disappointing though. I mean it's alright but it's just a bit shit. Nothing grabs. like I said it's alright. It just sounds a bit different - too different for my tastes. Have I said it's alright?

edit. Ok I suppose you need a song.

I also have to agree. The song they had up on their myspace, which I'm forgetting at the moment, I thought was pretty damn good and why I bought the album. However, I have to say that the album overall is beyond disappointing.

I totally dig Andy's voice and think he's one of the best frontmen on the planet. But he needs to start working with some new musicians/songwriters. Both Symphorce and Brainstorm, who ultimately don't sound altogether different to begin with, have both been recycling the same ideas for a number of years now.

Considering he also writes the music in both bands (he does, right??), maybe it's just his songwriting that has gone downhill. The last good Brainstorm album was Liquid Monster. Symphorce's last good album was Godspeed. It really has been a while since a band with Andy's involvement has released anything decent.

I'm under the impression he writes the melodies and lyrics for both bands. I think it's a smart move for vocalists to sometimes get away from that model, and use their voice to breathe life into another songwriter's melodies. I would love to see him come into a quality project and just handle the vocals.

As for Brainstorm, they've disappointed me. After Metus Mortis, I kept waiting them for them to take it to the next level, and they unfortunately went backwards.

I first got into them when Soul Temptation came out.
I thought it was very solid.
Though I agree it's been very mediocre since then.

Same with Symphorce.

Andy is basically in two "C" level metal bands, and should probably disband one to be brutally honest. Is there honestly a need for both bands?

Well to be fair this new Symphorce is very different to Brainstorm. It has modern influences, dance beats, industrial beats and all sorts going on. Brainstorm to me sticks pretty much to heavy power metal. Symphorce used to be quite similar but Unrestricted changes all that and I think it's no doubt on purpose. Heck the title itself is enough of a give away to say that the band is "unrestricted" by the boundaries of power metal. As for Brainstorm I found Memorial Roots to be a big let down like most of you guys however the previous one Downburst was easily one of the best Brainstorm albums of all time, any one who says that it's crap is either deaf or just got their head stuck in the sand. Downburst fuckin' rules badly!

What's up Greg? IMO, he needs to go back and do something with Ivanhoe. Those albums were the shit and I feel his voice is amazing in a pure prog metal setting. Don't get me wrong, I dig Brainstorm and Symphorce, but Ivanhoe was the shit back then and what originally got me into his vocals. It's almost like Khan with Conception.

Imagine Glenn brought back Andy with Ivanhoe to PP! That would be incredible; Andy needs to consider going back to his roots:rock:

Not much Bro. Going to BG next week?

Yes sir; will be at Epica the day before as well! Busy weekend. If you want to meet up for dinner, let me know.

I'm not sure I ever heard the Ivanhoe discs.

You have to hear the Ivanhoe discs; amazing stuff that still holds up today. It is prog metal as oppossed to to the power metal stuff he has done for the last 10 plus years with Brainstorm and Symphorce.

I actually like the SYMPHORCE song FIRE BREATH posted more than most other SYMPHORCE songs I have but I must say I have always liked BRAINSTORM much better than SYMPHORCE. I understand where everyone if coming from with the last BRAINSTORM album but I actually thought it was very good.

I give MEMORIAL ROOTS a 9/10 rating and I also thought the production and sound quality of that album was excellent and different than I've ever heard before. I recommend everyone listen to MEMORIAL ROOTS with a quality pair of headphones to get the full effect. The sound quality is superb.

I thought the sound quality of Memorial Roots was decent with the exception of the snare drum sound. It was so bad that it overpowered the rest of the instruments.

While I don't think Memorial Roots is as bad as people say...9/10? Really? I just find it sort of average. Honestly I like everything BS has ever done with this one being the worst but not bad.

Sorry, but Ivanhoe is pretty standard prog metal. Not bad, but nothing to rave over. I'd take Brainstorm over Ivanhoe any day.

And yes, Symphorce seems...unneccesary.

I actually agree with you there for the most part. Brainstorm did indeed spiral downward some on the previous two before MR, but I enjoy that disc. I wouldn't go 9/10, but a solid 7.5-8. "The Conjunction Of 7 Planets" is my second favorite BS song only behind "Lost Unseen." I also thought "Cross the Line" was very strong as well.

GODSPEED is an amazing album - but they have done nothing impressive since then

Brainstorm can get extremely repetitive for me very quickly and the last few just seem to be recycled material

Crap I just go back and listen to AMBIGUITY - that Brainstorm album kicks ass

Oh yeah .. both Brainstorm and Symphorce have hit the wall. Sinctuary from back in 01' still remains my favorite from Symphorce. Most of what they've done since is solid, but not all that memorable to me.

With Brainstorm .. Soul Temption was the last one they did that I really like quite a bit. The stuff since is also solid, but really quite unspectacular. Metus Mortis remains my favorite from them.

Out of the two, Symphorce tends to be my preferred band. I have not heard the newest one, but their stuff tends to be more complex, more groove-laden, and have more outside influences than Brainstorm, which is just straightforward metal. I say Symphorce is the more "necessary" of the two bands, if we're going to have THAT conversation.

I've actually been dying to hear some new Symphorce since Become Death came out several years ago. I need to get off my ass and check this out.

Brainstorm, to me, has been rather same-y and boring since Soul Temptation, the last disc of theirs I really liked.

Both Symphorce and Brainstorm, who ultimately don't sound altogether different to begin with, have both been recycling the same ideas for a number of years now.

The only discs the two bands released where they sound similar to each other are Soul Temptation and Twice Second. And every Symphorce disc that comes out sounds quite different from the one before it, as well as from the corresponding Brainstorm disc; remember when everyone was whining because Become Death was too aggressive for them after Godspeed? Contrast that to Brainstorm; every disc since Soul Temptation has been a sub-par clone of that disc. I realize that's within most people's "comfort zone", and that's why they prefer Brainstorm... but but let's not project Brainstorm's shortcomings onto SYmphorce just because they have the same frontman.

Ultimately, Andy's vocals and vocal melodies dominate the mix for both bands. And his approach to both bands is very similar. It's why these two bands will always be linked and compared.
