Serj has a powerful and versatile voice that he is able to control extremely well. He has a wide range: screams, growls, awesome clean stuff (e.g. "Spiders"). And most importantly of all, his vocals are very expressive. Be it anger, sadness, outrage, humor, boredom--you can hear it in his voice. At the very least, he is Pavarotti compared to Dani from Cradle Of Filth. And I'm sure we have quite a few COF fans in this forum.

(4) The music has no intensity or emotion. Give me a break. Listen to "Spiders", "Know", "Soil", "Suggestions", "P.L.U.C.K.", "Deer Dance", "Needles", "ATWA", "Toxicity", "Aerials". And then pull the tapeworm out of your ass.

(5) They suck. So does your mama.

Ultimately I think it comes down to the fact that SOAD are just too damn popular for the likes of many people on this board who insist that all good music must be "underground". I would love it if Opeth made it into the US charts someday so we can lose all these "underground" morons. Good music deserves to be popular.

Great points. In all fairness to the infidels, I doubt most of them have even heard more than just Chop Suey.

It all comes down to the music, no matter what. I admit SOAD arn't my cup of tea, but at least I don't go around attacking peoples opinions. The whole "underground = good ; mainstream = bad" idea is the fucking dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Still I support my initial statement that System of a Down, just like the rest of nu metal, sucks. And as Alucard said a while back, I thought that an Opeth message board would be a safe haven from such bands, but we were wrong.
I guess this world is in deeper shit than I thought.
Well what can we do... Still I am happy that there are at least a few of us here that know what music is supposed to sound like. And to the rest I offer just one more thing to chew on. A sincere and full hearted fuck you.

When you say that somebody has to be deaf to think that the vocals suck, you're doing exactly what you're telling people not to do in #1. Complexity in music does not necessarily make it good. Similarly, expressiveness and variety are not the only things that make good vocals for some people. For some people, the sound matters. I can't believe anyone, after hearing Serj's vocals, could not see how certain people may dislike them.

I've heard all of their first album and two songs off of the new one. On the first album, Spiders is the only song I like. On the second album, I've heard Prison Song and Chop Suey. Prison Song is just god awful...with that horrid sounding "they're trying to build a prison" or some crap line. Chop Suey isn't close to as bad as that but the vocals and boring music don't do it for me. The part where he holds out "DIE" sounds like shit to me, as do many other parts. However, I will say that when he sings it's not close to as bad as when he tries to scream and what not.

I know there are people on this board that hate SOAD just because they are popular. These are the people that state their opinion that "SOAD sucks" and don't back it up at all. However, some of you people defending SOAD are doing the same exact thing...practically saying that someone must be an idiot or deaf if they can't hear how good SOAD is. That's fucking absurd.
