It's not the name that's the ridiculous part (though yeah the name is stupid), it's the fact that these bands are 99% (random statistic) of the time just blackened folk bands (or folkened black bands). The term "viking metal" was just a catchy tag created by record labels and I don't think it ever meant to become a real, serious genre. Even Falkenbach, one of the leaders of the particular movement, denies his involvement with it.

I was actually just thinking of omitting the serious genre part because iirc BM started as somewhat of a joke. So yeah whatever.

"Blackened folk metal" or just "folk metal" are much better (and more descriptive) terms than "viking metal" will ever hope to be...

Compare Wyrd and Moonsorrow. You really can't. Why? Wyrd are folk black, Moonsorrow are Viking metal.

Wyrd's newest CD is actually pretty much just rock with harsh vocals and a happy, buzzy lead tone. I know older Wyrd is "folk black." Let's put it this way, all viking metal is folk/black, but not all folk/black could be called "viking metal." I don't give a shit if people use the term. I for one just don't like it and don't think it does justice to the bands, instead lumping them into a more thematic "genre" tag rather than what they actually sound like...
