Growling vocals

when i first heard Katatonia (clean vocals) i joined this forum thingy, then my friend told me Opeth are simillar so i checked out the opeth forum, and heard a few songs. after hearing the leper affinity i just turned it off, my first taste of growling. after awhile i heard Harvest and Dismal i thought the same as you (some of you might remember my, 'clean vocals' post ages ago) i thought that clean vocals were better. i just had to get used to it and that only took a few weeks of listening as i couldnt stop listening to the stuff. now im completely reversed, the growls are better and yeah the clean vocals are great too, i just love the mix between the 2, like in Drapery Falls for example. i really hope you get used to the growls as its just great. :)

I see Amorphis was a lot of people's first growly band that they liked... mine too. :D

But I think the band that *really* turned me on to deathy growling was Morgion. I was blow away by the fact that I could actually understand more than half of what he was saying... to me, *that* is talent. Not long after that, I was also impressed by Novembers Doom who has even more easily comprehensible growls.

I agree that it's an aquired taste... not many people hear them the first time and like them.

What I'm having trouble getting into is black metal screaming... Borknagar does it fairly tollerably, and I actually really like Vintersorg's BM vocals, but he uses them sparingly alongside his (better) clean vocals... but most others I just cringe at even to this day.

Growling vocals also make you approach the music differently, in terms of listening to it. Traditionally, the vocals carry the melody of the song. With growls, the guitars take on the melody- whether it's the ultra-melodic style of, say, My Dying Bride, or something more chord-based like Bolt Thrower (in this case, you should regard the chord progressions themselves as the melody- Emperor are very good at doing this, using alot of chord changes to give the impression of melody). I found that approach very helpful when I first got into it (yeah, I thought they were stupid to start with too  )

Wolverine's growling parts are great!
Growls can fit in very well in Death Metal, Black Metal etc. They match the music very well.

I only like "certain" growlers. The growls have to be rich, and powerful sounding but also decipherable. Guys like Akerfeldt and Kurt Bachman (Believer), IMO, are the best!
