Latest project I'm working on...Real drums, amps, etc. This is a fun 5 song EP to mix. Standard tuning makes for a nice tight tone, no doubt.

Amps are 5150 (left side) and Framus Cobra (right side). Dual miked with 57's, 1 on axis, 1 off.

Drums have some sample augemention, both pulled from the actual kit and some Slate, blended about 50/50.

Vocals have Dirty VCS and a shit ton of compression...Which pulls out the room a little more than I'd like, but so far I'm liking the mix...

The mix is great but the room on the vox is indeed very audible and not in a good way IMHO. Never had that problem so I really don't know how to help.

thanks guys...Yeah, the vocals are a bit loud in hindsight, and the room is OVERBEARINGLY not good.

I didn't track this, but it sounds like the room was definately untreated and with compression and the Nasty VCS clamping down, it's bring the room too much into the mix. I've compressed vocals in the past more than this and still not had the room sound as prevalent.

I'll have to see what I can do.

right guitar is much tighter, louder and attackier on the right, the vocals have a weird roomy decay and are way too loud.

yes, see above:

I ended up trying to use EQ filters to get rid of the room without having to ease up on the compression. I think it's better, but still not there. Also, the guitars are changed a bit to make them more even and tighter. I may post a mix up once I progress further.

thanks guys

haven't jammed this yet because i can't find the OG link, did you do my eq and bass suggestions? <3

Actually I did a little bit. Bass is already pretty compressed, but I added another dB or 2, lol. Guitars I did brighten a hair, but I EQ'd each side a little more even. The left side is a 5150 through a Marshall 1960, the right is a Framus Cobra through a VHT fatbottom. The Cobra had a bigger upper mid presence, while the 5150 had more low mids and bass. EQing them to be a little more equal made it better.

BTW, this clip is the same mix you've already heard.

I think my personal suggestions are this:

The solo guitar sounds a bit like the vocals where there's a bit too much room mixed in. At first I thought it was either a reverb with a very slow Predelay or kinda like a slapback delay, but now that you mention the room thingy for the vocals, that might be the same case for the lead guitar.

The rythm guitars to me sound a tiny tiny bit hollow. Might have to do a narrow surgical EQ somewhere around the mids?

The issues with the vocals have been mentioned.

The drum tone is KILLER. I really like it. Your kicks are always awesome and I think you did a really good job on the snare too. Maybe your mastering is eating it up a bit too much, tho, but I guess that's just a preference thing cause I like my snare super loud.

You're probably gonna be addressing this a bit later on, but just in case you miss it: I'd edit the guitars a bit in the stop parts. They could be a tad tighter in there.

:)
