I don't watch much TV, but right now I'm relaxing after a project and I'm watching this movie on AMC... I have to turn the TV wayyy up to hear the movie, and then when the commercials come on it's like BAM and I am half deaf. I suppose there is mad limiting on the commercials but not so much on the movie?

This is probably old news, but, that just goes to show you how often I watch TV.

Hahaha, I don't know how much sarcasm there was in your response, Oz, but personally it bothers me (that much ;)) as well - as if commercials weren't bad enough, they have to be all like KABLAMMO!!!! out of nowhere (especially the local Oneonta, NY commercials arrrggghhhhh so fucking low-budget and cheesy  )

I found this also annoying few years back. I had an old amp connected to my shitty mono tv. It had no remote so I had to jump up on the couch to adjust volume down during the commercials. And of course when the movie continued, turn the volume up. I Ended up to connect DC-motor next to the volume pot and a rubber band from the motor to the volume pot to turn it. Hooked up few switches to change voltage polarity to the motor to get vol up/dn. Then tape the switches and battery next to the couch and I was set. Those were the times :D It worked great, but my friends always laughed at it.. "goddamn macgyver" :D

That's absolutely brilliant :D

LOL those porn ads..

It gets ridiculous over here in Australia, nothing til midnight, then as soon as it hits midnight EVERY single ad bar one or two is porn. They sometimes play the exact same ad 3 times in one ad break.

On the loudness war..
I heard they use limiters on the ads to prevent them from being TOO loud and to get them an even volume. This is what they do on the radio too, isn't it? Otherwise you'd get Death Magnetic Rug Sales ads (perhaps an in-joke from Australia... the ones with 90% off rugs with a guy yelling at the top of his voice for 30 seconds straight).

This is EXACTLY what we have here in the states. For years I used my old DBX 160 compressor in my theater set up, for comercials...and those movies with TOO MUCH dynamics. You know what I mean...where most of the dialogue is almost at whisper quiet level. But then the music or sound effects kick in and nearly blows you across the living room.

Yeah, obviously you all know the reason for the loud commercials, to get our attention while we're running for a piss, or to go get another beer before the movie comes back on. Most modern TV's (probably 2000 onwards) have a compressor built in, I know Sony calls it "Steady Sound", and Samsung call it "Auto Volume". Or yeah, if you're running your TV through a stereo, then just buy a cheap Behringer Compressor or something (the amount you spend depends on how much you spent on your stereo), and hook it up.
