Tell me what you thing about this guitar player.

Well it's HIS playing, if he's okay with it... why bother? If he doesn't ask for advice... (Unless he's in your band...)

He'll eventually agree on his shortcomings if his stuff reaches a wider audience or he's working with professional engineers/producers who'll be telling him that his performance is lacklustre.

So, jut give it some time. Even Steve Vai COMPLETELY changed his picking technique after decades of playing with the biggest cats in rock and putting out solo records...

He claimed that I was the first person ever to comment on his playing in a negative way. However he seems to respect my opinion and he asked my advice and he does try to improve his playing to convince me he is as good as he thinks. Still, he doesn't fully admit/understand the shortcomings of his technique so there's not any significant improvement.

It's the right hand (or should I say arm) that really holds back his stability IMO; you can practice all you want with bad technique, but it's always gonna hold you back; pretty much every heavy-hitter I can think of (Petrucci, Romeo, Batio, Per Nilsson, Gilbert, Yngwie, etc.) keeps their right arms stationary and pick entirely from the wrist/fingers (in the case of Batio)

Now I am no king shit guitar player by any means, but I too can see this guy needs to work on some basics. He is reaching to far past his physical skills. Its like some one lifting more weight than they can handle at the gym, when they should be starting smaller and working there way up.

If he enjoys playing and is comfortable in his technique, why do you care?

I don't mean that as an insult, but I just don't see why you'd waste time trying to explain something to him that he doesn't want to hear. He'll figure it out eventually.

Obviously he' a lil sloppy joe, but if he doesn't care that's his problem, not yours.

Well, Im not that good, but Im better than that guy, which means he needs work, cuz I KNOW I need a shit ton of work.

Thats how I look at it anyways, lol

That's exactly what I told him, "If you enjoy playing like this and you're comfortable with your technique, why do you care what I think?"
Still, he's really concerned that I don't like his playing and he is trying to figure out why.
Since he said I was the only one I didn't like it, I created this thread for him to read some unbiased opinions and some helpful advice.

Thank's again to all, btw, for watching the video and commenting .

and also because of this he has to have his guitar fairly high above his waist to allow for more arm movement, which just reinforces his bad technique.

Imo, He seems to be in that transitional stage of getting the hang of playing fast. He seems to know how to play tight, but like "midget donkeys" said he's playing a little past his physical ability.

I haven't watched past 1:17 because I assume I've seen enough to guess the rest of his performance. But I'd have to agree with everyone and say the main problem I could see was his right hand being inaccurate or not very precise with what he was picking. That mixed with his right and left hand syncing.

Again, just my opinion and It's definitely something that can be fixed through practicing.
