That new Mastodon rekkid

As a long time non-fan of this band, I actually really dig this new one a lot. I've never had anything against Mastodon but they just didn't seem very special to me. Overrated I guess you could say. However, the new album is thoroughly impressing me. I just wish Scott Kelley was their permanent singer. The title track is the best one on the cd I think, mainly because of Kelley's vocals.

Maybe after I absorb this one a bit I'll revisit their older shit.

love the whole album. The last baron is my favorite song. I love how it's more of a hard rock/prog rock album than anything else. Really strong songwriting and great chemistry.

this and the new kylesa are the only metal albums I'm really digging this year.

haha they are a metal band right :) I don't get a metal vibe from it at all, I don't know.

maybe compared to their other albums.

when I listen to it, I feel like I'm listening to some kind of sabbath/king crimson hybrid.

I dunno... the main reason I never got into them before is because I didn't think they were very heavy. They get lumped in with metal a lot, but they've never sounded like much of a metal band to me.

Is this new one anything like Leviathan or is it more like their other releases? I really like Leviathan, but the others... not so much.

its good, but it feels incomplete, like its missing something (the sludge and metal). there arent as many of the big riffs and big grooves and insano drumming that made Mastodon one of my favorite bands. The Czar and The Last Baron are definite standouts, but a lot of the rest just kind of gloss by without making as much of an impression. i like it, and its growing with each listen, but i like all of their other releases more and i dont think that will change.

Agreed - I never got into them but this new cd is something completely different not only for them, but for most of the hard rock/metal genre. I hear some 70's Rush and Ozzy in there and overall - the album has a lot of depth. Definitely one of the best cd's of the year!

This makes me really curious now, as I am in the same boat when it comes to Mastodon. I never understood the big deal, but if it's praised coming from another non-fan, then I must check it out.

EDIT: Listening to "Oblivion" right now and I'm thoroughly impressed. If they keep this up for the rest of the record, they will have earned themselves a new fan.

EDIT #2: Yep. I dig it.

it is a troubling sign when you see many more people say, "ive never been into Mastodon, but this new one rules!" than say, "im a huge Mastodon fan, and this new one rules!" i hope the next one is ultra brutal and chaotic. bring back that Lifesblood/Remission fire!

I just cant dig Mastadon, it feels like all the times when i try getting into rap and just give up trying. But i dide see them live with Children of Bodom and I must say ... errmm, Im trying ..ahh fuck it, i cant.

I'm with Neal on this one. Solid record but the older ones have that manic quality I really dug. Saw them support Slayer in Prague. Mastodon blew my mind, groove and metal and madness. Slayer were pretty boring.

Cheese pizza burger with bacon.
