Hmm, interesting. I don't really "roll with" any of them but
Most influencial, probably Venom
My favourite to listen to, probably Bathory
Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, great band, but not as influencial as Venom and Bathory..
Mercyful Fate fucking rule. Though I think Black Metal would have blown up like it did even if they had never existed..
I'm voting Bathory.
I think Mayhem are the most influencial Black Metal band though, even more so than Venom. Who technically started it all.
Your right. The others did have that post black metal sound. And the early Death demos sound like Hellhammer and Venom. If we were going for later stuff id vote Venom because Prime Evil is such a bloody good album.
I'm going to have to go with Hellhammer/Celtic Frost purely because I Don't have that much Venom. Tom G. Fischer of both bands has stated on many occassions that Hellhammer was just a bad copy of Venom. Even so they had a bit more going on than Venom and that was carried over to Celtic Frost which as a band was far more influential on Black Metal than Venom. The imagery and subjects that Venom played about were adopted by Black Metal bands but I think Venom's style lended itself far more to the Death Metal sector as did Hellhammer. But I do think that Celtic Frost set more of a musical template for Black Metal than the earlier two bands.
And before you say anything I couldn't possibly comment on Mercyful Fate or Bathory because I havn't gotten into them so therefore it would be unfair of me to rule them out in anyway.
Venom - every1 likes them
Bathory - who doesn't love them ?
Hellhammer(voted) - i prefer Hellhammer tha Celtic Forst
Mercyfull Fate - KVLT, but not enough to make me vote
ALL of these mentioned bands influenced black metal in one way or another, the blueprint writers if you will. My top favorites are Mercyful Fate, and BATHORY.
I would like to pick mayhem. But,I start the originals.
1.Venom
2.Bathory
3.Mercyful fate gotta love king diamond
4.and I guess Hellhammer/Celtic Frost.Though Celtic frost sold out with a ballad in the '80's
What? Celtic Frost sold out with a ballad? I think you should do some reading. Celtic Frost introduced different styles of music into their sound along with the metal. They messed up with Cold Lake in '88 and Tom Fischer fully admits that and he hates the album. But one thing they never really did was a ballad. Sure they had slower music but none of it was ballady as such.
Thank you. I even liked Cold Lake but its definately a derision of an album from that band. Vanity/Nemesis was better. Got heavier again. Then they stopped for some reason. As they have done again. But Tom will be back.
