The Animation Appreciation Thread

Eating breakfast I thought "Shit I forgot about Adult Swim, Home Movies was actually decent" but apparently that started in 1999 anyways. Yeah Xavier is good. I was just thinking about the big children's channels of Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, and WB.

Recently (binge) watched through Death Note. Great series with a few flaws.

The positives: L is one of the coolest characters I’ve encountered in an anime. He’s the perfect subtle genius rival to Light. I also really liked the ending contrary to some opinions I’ve seen.

The negatives: Misa was about as annoying and cliche as anime characters get. Also, I think the series could’ve been shorted a bit and I think I could’ve been satisfied with a little less of Light’s “haha! I am one step ahead of you!” internal dialogue. I also didn’t find Near a very compelling character, or he should’ve at least been introduced earlier so he had room to develop as a character.

Anyways, I give it a 9 out of 10. Very worthwhile.

I bought the Death Note collection years ago and still haven't watched it. My brother watched it and had a lukewarm opinion of it and also predicted that I wouldn't like it all that much, so since then I've just not bothered for whatever reason. I actually kinda forgot I even had it until now.

I'm watching Dennou Coil right now. More serious than I expected, I thought it was just be a random casual adventure show about kids looking into alternate dimensions, but so far it's really good, more tense than most anime I've seen tbh.

I actually have a friend who is that particular about anime so I (kinda) understand where you’re coming from.

Death Note is still awesome though.

Berserk was disappointing. Started OK, got a bit tedious with all the fight cycles and rapey bits, got more interesting when the political intrigue increased, then 2edgy4me by the end.

Nichijou is love.

hbb probably hates it lol. death note is an unhinged high-stakes psychological thriller with a cop and criminal trying to outwit each other, basically. if that sounds like fun it's more or less the best of its kind that i've come across; it's gratifyingly fucked up and super focused which allows it to ramp up the intensity to insane levels. it's considered trashy by more h/c and arty anime types and, i mean, it is trashy, but you're far from snobby about genre trash so that shouldn't put you off.

Haven't seen it, though I know it's very popular. The first seven episodes of Paranoia Agent are the greatest bits of anime I've ever seen so 'psychological thriller with a cop and criminal trying to outwit each other' definitely isn't inherently a bad thing, though in general most anime/manga writers seem to be fairly garbage at writing a sensible conclusion, so on that basis I'd probably end up not liking it. Eventually I'll get to it anyways.
