The best tech death band of all time

Galy spawned two of my favorite Canadian Artists, Despised Icon (now on Century Media) and Beneath The Massacre (now on Prosthetic). I may be misunderstanding the definition of technical death metal, but my votes for Brain Drill on Metal Blade. It's insanely fucking hard to try and play, honestly it's kind of hard to listen to

Alright, this thread made me check out Psycroptic but I didn't like that for one bit. Just a bunch of random macho bullshit is what it sounded like.

Martyr however kicks BALLS. I discovered Martyr over a year ago, thanks to this forum, and they've been on my fuckin' top list ever since. The music is just beautiful.

Also... from Psycroptic, I stumbled onto Youtube and then a video of some Dying Fetus song. Now... is this a joke or is this album really mixed this way? I can't hear anything but a motherfuckin' kick drum and vocals.

First of all, bullshit! Psycroptic are amazing, especially the intro to Alpha Breed which you can just go along with by making stupid noises and doing inhales for fun. :D

Secondly, yup its mixed that way :erk:

Hah, yeah I used to show that one to my bandmates as a demonstration in "ways to fuck up while attempting death metal". Also, that might be one of the absolute worst displays of "stage presence" I have ever come across. The bassplayer fucking looks like he's William Shatner trying to charm you into his bed of space roses.

(Dying Fetus, that is)

I'm enjoying listening to this band! The thrash style vocals really fit well.

I also love Psycroptic, and saw them at a very small venue earlier this year. They were fantastic.

My favourite tech death ever has to go to Decapitated though.

I saw some videos of a band tracking some songs on youtube called 'Soreption' and I'm very excited to hear a release from them too.

Wow they're very good. But I'm sorry they have NOTHING on Necrophagist in my opinion. Muhammed Scuicmez is a legend and I doubt he will ever be dethroned in the tech death genre.

^ What I think is Suiçmez's got a hold on the technical side but not on the whole melodic aspect and feeling as much as Mongrain.

IMPORTANT!!! -> IMO.

Some of those riffs are cool but I dont like the singing/sound of the band for some reason. It does sound like tech thrash! I like the beat changing death sound for these styles better. Which is why I say Psycroptic holds the crown. ObServent is fucking amazing and still blowing me away. And I class Decapitated in their own league aswell. But more 'death metal' then any other category. I mean when they hit it was just really fucking kickass, break the mould, how the fuck are these guys so young, death metal.

Glad to hear about Martyr. Been a fan since 2004. I do not understand why century media or similar labels don't pick these guys up.. They've even got quite a lot of fans that I know of here in Iceland.

I tend to go more for the bands that let melody and good songstructures come before "technicality", and go less for the bands just qualifying for the shred olympics.. stuff like Necrophagist bores me to death.

If you tech death guys haven't you should check out Theory In Practice:
Theory In Practive: (keyboards sound way louder than on the real album on this youtube clip - damn I hate keyboards)

Also, happy to many namedropping Psycroptic as well, I love their stuff as well..

I love Martyr, and that Theory in Practice song right above is one of my favorite tracks by them. Psycroptic is incredible, as well. I'm not into tech-death as much as I used to be, but I still worship these three bands.

Dan Mongrain is playing with Voivod these days.

well, first things first: i've grown to love tech death bands. especially those who still play brutal music, and don't sacrifice the brutality for sheer technique.

psycroptic is way high on my list, love them, especially observant

cool mix too, slightly annoying kick though. interesting point is that their live sound is pretty much exactly like this cd.

same goes for beneath the massacre, dystopia....BTM is a band that i considered bullcrap for a LONG time. saw them live this year, and they were really fuckin intense....tbh i didn't get it at first, haha. it was a few days later when i actually said to myself man, this band ROCKS. loving their album(s) ever since. dystopia is another example of a band capturing their live sound.....i'm not joking, their sound was exactly like that.

other than that, obscura are great too, albeit a bit too melodic at times. still a great band....it's just that they're NOT a tech death band by any means....more like well done extreme music. interesting thing about their live show was that i actually was more impressed with the singer/guitar player than with their supposed lead guitar player, christian münzner (lives in my area btw), ex necrophagist member. their singer actually often played the more difficult riffs/harmonies, and had way more attitude overall....münzner is just touching the strings, whereas steffen really seems to dig in. i like that! ;)

i'm also a big fan of decapitated (organic...jeesus...),
necrophagist (although they're NOT the tech death gods people try to make out of them as far as i am concerned. there's a reason why the new album get's delayed over and over again, and IMHO it's because they just can't let it go, with all the new bands like obscura putting out great albums. after all necro's fame is based only on two real albums, and they really have a name to loose if the third one isn't as groundbreaking as the other two....which certainly is a difficult task, seeing how much great music is being released nowadays. people just took the necro induced ball and ran with it, and to me it seems as if muhammed struggles with keeping up....),
decrepit birth (somewhat annoying and not as well written as the other bands though).
death - tsop is also a great album, although once again not exactly tech death imho.
spawn of possession is really fucked up, too (in a good way), and i really enjoyed augury's first one....i don't know one single band that sounds even similar to their first CD. the combination of female opera style vocals, growls, and overall death metal brutality is just very unique and great imho. don't quite like their second one as much though....partly because they pretty much dropped the whole opera style thing.

not a big fan of despised icon, though, aside from a few songs....too "core"ish maybe.

as for martyr and theory in practice, well, they are certainly really technical and great players, but to me it's not quite brutal enough (not even death metal as far as i am concerned, esp. martyr)....still great bands of course.
