The best tech death band of all time

necrophagist (although they're NOT the tech death gods people try to make out of them

I dont have a deeper knowledge of death metal but I dont know any band with such complexity and technical skills like them. I also have tried to play some of their stuff and it´s too fucking hard. His alternate picking is near to perfection.

No offense men but you must be joking. Necrophagist have more riffs with one song than martyr with three. And yes I heard martyr.

I'm listening to the album for the fifth time today and I haven't heard a riff repeat for more than four measures.. I think you must be listening to a pretty average song ;) Anyway, it's not just about that. They have a far more original sound, more abstract modes/scales/timing etc

If any doubts arise whether Necrophagist are the gods of tech death, just listen to "Fermented Offal Discharge" and "Advanced Corpse Tumor" off "Onset Of Putrefaction" and anything off "Epitaph".

I'm sorry, with all due respect P-E, the solos themselves show what kind of melody this band is capable of producing and playing.

I'm not trying to be a fanboy here because I respect all your opinions, but lets pay some homage to the pioneers of the sub-genre where it is due. Even if Necrophagist isn't your favourite band, bashing them for being limited or not melodic enough isn't doing them justice in my opinion.

shit, forgot the faceless. awesome band, although i prefered akeldama...matter of taste, i guess.

anyways, as for necrophagist being the n.1 tech death band....well, maybe it's part of their sound that they combine technique with brutality and some melody, but imho for each of these aspects there are loads of other bands that are already doing better than necro. obscura e.g. is doing way more complex stuff, both technically and melodically/harmonically speaking. beneath the massacre is also way more technical AND more brutal, while lacking some of that neoclassical melody obviously. but thinking about it, spawn of possession actually is another band that's technical and melodic as fuck while being really brutal.

and as far as technical perfection of their playing goes....well....i know for fact that they're as much of a studio band as anyone nowadays. don't try to picture them going into the studio and laying down those riffs on the fly....i'm not saying muhammed isn't a good guitarist (he obviously is), but he's not the super player people try to make out of him. he's a really really good composer, though!

and while it's way fucking difficult to sing and play like that at the same time, he's not the only one who can pull that off.....once again, obscura's singer/guitarist is doing so too, and fwiw some of their riffs are even more complex to play than necro ones. check it out:

tbh i was really fucking impressed when i saw them live, because i expected christian münzner to handle most of the difficult lines so that steffen could concentrate on singing....nope....he's actually playing the higher harmony for the main riff, which is way more difficult....goes like 7th D string to 2nd E string 6th 2nd etc...but i digress...

Well I heard the songs in myspace and in my opinion they arent so complex as Necrophagist. Yeah but I agree about originality. I am not even a fan of Necrophagist, they are too complex, technical and all that shit but they are bored. Too skills but few music. I only recognizes their technical capacities.

Martyr indeed kicks ass.

I've never really understood the appeal of Necrophagist. I mean, it's obviously technical stuff and very demanding to play - but to me it's just a snoozefest.
Good technical death metal is, in my opinion, challenging in other ways, not just in speed / technique. And the nonstop sweep-tap solos get old fast.

Gorod is a good example. Harmonically and rhythmically interesting - even if it's not always full speed extreme tech.

And does anybody else enjoy the album Obscura, by Gorguts? It's in a class by itself.

Was JUST going to mention Gorguts.
