I think it's because people realized that if you keep it out of focus, it looks like a mistake, but in fact works brilliantly to hide imperfections and blemishes.

Isn't that what the smudge tool on any basic photo editor is for? Or does this generation not have time to edit them? JUST GOTTA SLAP THEM ON AND GET BACK TO SOCIAL NETWORKING ON MY PHONE!
