the FBI closes Megaupload

C'mon guys...Megavideos was totally hilaroius...you could watch a movie still out on theater, in streaming. I can't understand how some sites can live that much.
So where is the difference between movie piracy and music piracy? In my opinion is the same thing.
Said that, I'm with you that there are lot of other ways to fight piracy...but when you run a site like megavideo, you have to expect to be arrested.

If you read the news about Megaupload you would probably agree with them being shut down...

The site apparently offered paid incentive programs to people who uploaded popular copyrighted material and didn't remove copyright material to the extent required by law when asked. It sounds like the people involved were encouraging it's use for illegal activity so they could profit.

Well I don't care too much about megavideo but about the fact that every site could get blocked just because a user posted a link to some copyrighted material (for example a photograph) or just a link to a website that has copyrighted content posted somewhere on its page, if the sopa bill passes. This is insane. Imagine the damage just one silly person could do to the resources we have on the internet including forums like this one.

I'm so fucking angry right now this is fucking ridiculous. The US government has basically just proved they are the furthest thing from a democracy. So they've passed the NDAA which allows them to arrest anyone anywhere for 'terrorism'. And these laws apparently apply all over the fucking world (the guys arrested today were from NZ) - so I have no say in these laws that are passed, yet they apply to me. Although I guess you guys in the US have no say in these laws either.

And then the entire fucking internet goes down for a day, proving how ridiculous SOPA and PIPA are. 4.5 million people sign a petition in one day, a whole bunch of politicians back off (in other words, delay their support 'til the bill is attached to a child porn bill). Then the next day the US goes 'fuck you' and downs MegaUpload which is 4% of the internet.

So basically Cloud Computing is now fucked. Anyone who stored their information on MegaUpload has lost it now. What if DropBox goes down, and I lose all my backups there?

And this whole thing is about $500 million in 'lost sales'. First of all, it's not lost sales, it's imaginary numbers. Second of all, am I the only one who thinks $500 million is NOTHING compared to $13 trillion of debt? Why do these people hold so much influence over the government? Jesus H Fucking Christ.

Am I the only one who actually agrees with this? With shutting down Megaupload not SOPA...

90% of the files and videos floating there were copyrighted material, god forbid an era where it's actually hard to download albums and/or movies for free...

What the fuck? Firstly, where did you get 90% from? Your ass?

Secondly, if this had just happened to DropBox - which can ALSO be used to host copyrighted material in exactly the same way - what would you have just lost right now? Would you be pretty fucking pissed off?

Thirdly, god forbid an era where it's actually EASY to download albums, movies, TV shows. I've pirated ONE game this year, because there was no demo and I deleted it it 30 minutes later because it was shit. I've bought thirty games this year off Steam. Imagine if there was Steam for music, albums, TV shows. And not iTunes because Apple can suck my overpriced cock.

First of all, everything I have on my dropbox, I have on my HDD as well, if people had stuff laying around only on Megaupload, well, tough luck, it's a pretty retarded decision to make.

I'm talking about piracy, not better means of content delivery. I love Steam, it's awesome, love it since the first time it came out. Love my xbox, where I can watch loads of shit on Netflix, stream a 1080p movie just like that if I want to.

Now, all of this is very plausible and none of this would ever be shutdown, obviously. I'm talking about bittorrent websites, for example, you KNOW that 90% of what's there is piracy. How can you actually not see that?

And yes, I did download a couple of albums to have a listen to (deleted straight after a listen through) but, not only is it rare that I do it, but I wouldn't cry if the ability to download free albums was completely abolished, I would actually be quite happy.

Since when is Megaupload Bit-torrent?

90% of the stuff I've downloaded from Megaupload has been modifications for games. Which are PERFECTLY FUCKING LEGAL and NOT PIRACY AT ALL. But of course you wouldn't know that since you're perfection incarnate and you're completely against anything that helps people get things legally and easily.

NDAA had nothing to do with the arrests of the guys in NZ, just for the record.

Anyone who doesn't think that Megaupload was designed and used for piracy is being willfully ignorant. I'm in full agreement with this takedown, but not the overall agenda it's a part of.

I don't know the specifics of the motives behind Megaupload (although I do know it's widely used for warez), but quite a few of my clients have been using it to send me material for whatever reasons. So to me this means I have to teach more people to use my FTP server or Dropbox, which can be a hell of a task

I don't recommend participating in a DoS attack. Think about this: the government now has the power to arrest anyone for terrorism. They said months ago that an organized attack on a government computer will be understood as a terrorist attack. If you're participating in the attack and you're not covering your tracks then you shouldn't be surprised when the FBI knocks down your door at 3AM while your parents are sleeping. I'm guessing most of the Anonymous are 16 to 22 year old guys, I did the same shit when I was a kid and even got a couple letters in the mail from the DoJ. I just would hate to see someone fuck up their life because of a couple of mouse clicks. The DoJ could put you jail, fine you, and take away your computer rights for years (or life).
