Kinda convenient that they chose today, the day after the SOPA blackout, to pull these arrests off. If yesterday was the civilized response then today was the barbarians at the gates--the perfect PR tool to point to regarding locking down the internet

How is bringing down the websites of organizations you don't like AGAINST censorship? It's the definition of censorship.
Meanwhile google, wikipedia, mozilla, and millions of people (and thousands more companies) managed to protest and petition SOPA and PIPA legally and effectively.

I don't have to look hard to find a number of records I've worked on illegally being hosted on sites like Rapidshare, Mediafire, Filesonic, Rapid4All etc. Often they come up as first or second page results on Google. Even people not looking to pirate would have the option flashed right in their faces.
The gov't has a way of handling these things really poorly, but at its heart, the problem does exist.

You are right with your statement egan. I think that's exactly their point. Letting them "taste their medicine" - just read some anonymous twitter profiles. I don't think it goes to far that anonymous lets them know that their approaches to solving problems with piracy are total overkill and probably just another excuse to gain even more control.

I don't think anyone's denying that piracy is a huge problem... I (and like 3/4ths of the US) think they're just going at it like throwing 3 grenades into a room with 25 hostages and 2 armed bad guys.
It's not a problem that can be dealt with by using brute force...

Oh there's definitely an agenda behind it. Have you ever actually read SOPA? It's worded dangerously vague. You know the drill... massive loopholes for them to take advantage of. The government isn't stupid... and I don't think that's really a good thing. I'd rather have good hearted idiots in charge than evil geniuses...

As has been discussed before, this is obviously not really about copyright. It's the powers at be in panic mode, trying to get their hands on the internet and control it/dominate it/regulate it/censor it/steal it, all under the lame pretense of fighting piracy.
SOPA / PIPA are not about stopping internet piracy. They're about controlling the flow of information and/or profiting from it. It's all about GREED and killing FREEDOM.
Yet as usual, many fall for it. You'd think people would know better by now :Smug:
