the FBI closes Megaupload

For more than 50 years now good, talented musicians are underpaid, entertainers who barely can sing are overpaid. This was before the internet, this is during the internet time. Big media corporations are bigger thieves than any of us here on the internet.
It's wel known that record companies contract bands with a +100 page contract and in the end, the band is only signed for the company to own the songs so they can put it on the name of their hit-artist, whit the other band left, empty handed, behind.
When was it EVER profitable for a amateur musician to tour and bring out records on your own? NEVER! As soon as you get airplay, you're boosted by a big corporation that gladly fills their pockets with your money. Before the internet there was 1 option: get fucked by a record company that puts your money in their pockets. With the coming of internet and download there are 2 options: 1 - get fucked by a record company that puts your money in their pockets. 2 - let people download your album, al be it for free, and get new fans. The money won't end up in your pocket anyway.

The CD I buy in the record store or on iTunes, 95% goes to all parties in between the artist and seller. Yes you're not supposed to steal and yes piracy is a crime, it shouldn't be there, but it's there. But I sort of got to think, where does the money go?
I prefer buying CD's from bands on tour, the majorty of those sales will go in their pockets, even though they probally bought against a high price from the record company.

I don't know exactly where I want to go with my ramble, personally I'm again the SOPA/PIPA laws because it's turning internet to a policed thing, it's makes you, the internet user, guilty of a crime until proven innocent. How fucked up is that? Do we suddenly live in Iran?

Warner Brothers, Universal, Sony, they all still make LOADS of money, yes a bit less than before, but is that really a bad thing?
Taking down Megaupload, and arresting their employees, isn't that the kind of regime Nazi Germany had in the second World War, a regime China currently has etc. etc.?

What about Twitter removing the trending topic #opmegaupload, what kind of weak ass government controlled pussies are they?

That's bullshit they decided to close Megaupload. Instead of targeting the illegal offenders, they make all of us suffer. Blah blah.

Do you understand you're on a forum where a vast majority of users either make their living off of music or aim for that? You pretty much just entered a massage parlour with no pants on and shouted "ALL RIGHT WHORES, WHO'S READY FOR THE MASTER OF ANAL CARESSING?" without realizing the girls don't really give a fuck about your penis because they're busy actually massaging people.

If anyone actually took the time to read what the people at Megaupload were doing, you'd realize they were not just hosting files and ignorant to what was being hosted...

yeah good point. i say the same thing about pot. the people who sell it think it's oregano and various cooking spices the whole time, they were pretty ignorant to what it was and being used for.

I think you misunderstood my post, I said they were not just hosting files while being ignorant to the contents of those files. They were hosting copyrighted material and paying the people who uploaded it. They were also not removing copyrighted material when asked, just changing the link. They weren't committing crimes just by being a file hosting site, they were actively and intentionally committing crimes to make money.

yep, that's how I understood it too.
Getting arrested for that seems legit to me.

True that, but people making money from the illegal downloading instead of you is pretty fucked up imo

This was actually a good read surprisingly...

I hope SOPA passes.

nice read

I'm so fucking angry right now this is fucking ridiculous. The US government has basically just proved they are the furthest thing from a democracy. So they've passed the NDAA which allows them to arrest anyone anywhere for 'terrorism'.

you know thats actually not accurate right? That law is almost exactly the same as its been. When Obama signed it, he added a provision that states that particular interpretation isn't being implemented

I'm not the one stealing anything, I'm simply accessing something that's already been accessed.

hey fuckface

at the risk of pointing out something you already most certainly know ...

RECEIVING / POSSESSION OF STOLEN PROPERTY

"Receiving stolen property is defined by statute in most states. Generally it consists of four elements: (1) the property must be received; (2) it must have been previously stolen; (3) the person receiving the property must know it was stolen; and (4) the receiver must intend to deprive the owner of his or her property.

A person receives stolen property by acquiring or taking manual possession of it. Physical possession, however, is not always required. Under some statutes, it is sufficient if the accused has exercised control over the property. For example, a statute may declare that paying for the property constitutes control, regardless of whether the accused has handled it.

In many jurisdictions a belief that the property is stolen satisfies the knowledge element. It has been held that a mere suspicion does not constitute knowledge. Some statutes provide that a person has knowledge if he knows, or has reason to know, that goods are stolen. Another test is whether a reasonable person would suspect that the property was stolen. Knowledge is commonly proved by the circumstances surrounding the receipt of the property. For example, unexplained possession of goods that were recently stolen raises a presumption that the possessor received them illegally.

In order to be guilty, the receiver must intend to deprive the owner of the property. The crime is committed even if the receiver intends to obtain a reward for returning the property because she has gained a benefit from depriving the owner of possession, even temporarily."

sure, go on, joke about it ... but when it happens to you too I don't think you'll find it to be so fuckin funny

Seems like megauploads biggest problem was not the illegal filesharing but that it wasn't part of a bigger media network.

Not all of us work in fabulous studios and make a nice paycheck because this is the 5th band they've tracked/mixed/mastered this week or even given the job opportunity to be a professional engineer/mixer/master. Not everyone has those luxuries and in the times of the digital era, I say right on. I think it's fair game. People wanna bitch at people who torrent music plugins and libraries and call them thieves and supposedly ruin businesses. However, paying several hundred dollars and making it seem like it's a great deal on a sound sample library is fucked.

That's just bullshit, if you don't have nice paychecks and work in a fabulous studio, it's more logical to fucking WORK to get yourself a nice studio, become better at your job and earn the equipment you want than stealing everything!

If you can't afford a Protools HD and lots of waves plugins, then get something else, there are plenty of options out there that work great, no one is forcing you to use X plugins or daw's or anything to do your job.
Save some fucking money, then buy stuff.

Totally agree with you dude!

I'm quoting this b/c it needs to be repeated. It sucks that legitimate users were put out in the cold but that is a biproduct of the companies dangerous biz practices.

On an aside, expecting a free service to be around forever is bad planning. They could have easily been bought out out and shutdown (like FB did to drop.io) or simply changed their terms of service.

Lets hope Grooveshark is next.

Fuck Megaupload. I don't care about the whole piracy debate, I'm fucking tired of it. But anyone who is fucking Alicia Keys and isn't me deserves to be put through the meat-grinder.

Does nobody else find it slightly amusing that Swizz Beats is pretty much the personification of the 1% that Anonymous is usually railing against?
