the FBI closes Megaupload

I heard/read about this the other day as well, but can't remember where now. Is this actually confirmed though? Definitely, very interesting development.

If you do a bit of research you can find the information that Megabox was partnering up with 7digital, Gracenote, Rovi and Amazon.

So the big conspiracy is that they were going to roll out a new version of bandcamp/CDBaby/tunecore/etc.?
Self financing instead of being on a label has offered 90% profits for as long as I've been alive.

I read both the post and the linked article and I still don't see what the big deal is other than people want a conspiracy (beyond the obvious one). This isn't even a new service, but a rebrand. There were websites (MP3.com for example) giving hits royalties for (free) music downloads a decade ago.

This thread is ridiculous, some of you need your head checked. That is all I am going to say on the matter. Everything in the world costs money, why shouldn't creative content?

Oh that's right, self-entitlement.

haven't really followed the thread, but for the first time in many years iv'e tried to download an album (Aerosmith - Get A Grip) and FAILED.
seems like all file sharing servers are down.

i couldn't be happier :hotjump:

I'm sick of this picture comparing him to a rapist.

He is not charged for 50 years, it's a myth. Maybe he will, depending on the calculation, but for the moment the number comes out of the blue and I've found no declaration mentionning officially those 50 years. Also, the rapist is from another country, with other laws. In usa, I think he would have risked perpetuity, and considering he raped and killed the woman, he would have got it.
And finally, they are comparing what he 'risks' to what someone got as a final judgement, which are 2 very different things.

I also read his bio, and the further I went, the less I felt sympathy for a guy like him. He was even megaloman. I now doubt Megabox would have been really an honest deal, considering how many dishonest things he has done in the past (he started by selling credit card numbers when he was adolescent, stole millions that he gave to greenpeace, has been charged and sentenced - although lightly - for when you sell or buy actions because you know by advance or trigger a change in the share values etc). Seems like he went back to a better path some time ago by using his skills to be consultant in data security, but I wouldn't trust him too easily if he started something like Megabox, I would need to see the contracts and the way it works, and the risks considering his path, before saying it was a cool and generous idea.

This was probably a pressure on the majors and apple/itunes, wether it was honest or not, though.

The long and short of all of this is two sided ....

We all want a free and open internet i.e. the ability to visit the site we want when we want and how we want without some government bureaucracy stopping us. That I am all for

The flip side of that is you technically can't have a free and open internet without piracy. No matter how hard the gov't clamps down on file sharing sites another 5 will pop up for every 1 they take down. Look at the Napster debacle. Napster closed and Lime Wire popped up, Lime Wire closed and torrents popped up, its a never ending cycle.

All of that being said the only way to completely stop piracy is to stop supporting it and when you see it report it. If we want to keep the internet free and open then we need to stop the pirates on our own. Cause if we keep going the way we are going a free and open internet is a pipe dream.

In addition to all of that anyone that downloads $5000 worth of Waves and Antares plugins is a fool. Just cause you have "brand name" stuff doesnt make you a better engineer. If you want to become a better engineer learn to use the free software that comes with your DAW. If you can get good mixes using the free stuff in your DAW, when you finally CAN afford Waves stuff your mixes will be that much better.

Just my 2 cents.

damn...

i just can't get over that feeling i had while i wasn't able to find any link that works... for a second i had hopes that piracy will be gone and we're gonna go back to the 80's.
what a day it would be if we had to actually buy albums we want to listen to again... bah nevermind im just rambling

A lot of people have only managed to hear about my band due to pirating music/ compilation sharing. I'm really 2 minded about it. Weird feeling for sure...
