The Halo Effect - New Album 2023/2024

I think that does bring up my biggest qualm with all of it (Which hey, I really don’t have too many, especially not with MotU)— Engelin’s riffs, and his motto regarding them. “Obey the riff” is the little slogan, but I feel like his riffing is generally weaker than everything else he does, and it’s generally not super heavy. It’s a small thing, and I really do need to emphasize that everything else he does, especially with Jesper, is wonderful. The melodies on this album in particular are exactly why I fell in love with melodic death metal in the first place, so I’m still just as happy with MotU as I was when it first released, if not more.

I do like the chorus melody - I just wish the rest of the song was a bit more interesting, and maybe a bit more uptempo. It's just a bonus track though so I'm not going to judge it beyond that scope. It's an OK song, but I don't think I'll listen to it much.

I'd been meaning to give my thoughts on the Halo Effect gig I was at last week, but Storm Éowyn decided to deprive me of electricity for three days, so I wasn't able to, and didn't get round to once the power came back. Long story short, it was excellent. Both support acts were enjoyable. I'd say Bloodred Hourglass were stylistically more my thing, being more of a melodic death metal band, but Pain were definitely more fun/polished and had a clearer sound. At first I was a little worried that it was the sound in the venue, because Bloodred Hourglass sounded like a wall of noise and it was quite difficult to discern the pitch of the melodies a lot of the time. When THE came on, that fear was dispelled instantly, the melodies were crystal clear. There really is nothing quite like hearing that Gothenburg twin guitar sound being created right in front of you, it just envelops you and cuts through you.

From a performance standpoint, I have zero complaints. They were flawless and engaging. Mikael comes across as such a nice dude who really loves what he does, they all seemed very appreciative of the audience and impressed at the reception they were receiving. Setlist-wise, they played about half of MotU and 3/4 of DotL, which I guess is a sensible approach if you have two albums, although I certainly wouldn't have minded if it was more MotU-heavy. The one thing I would say is that I would have preferred if they'd played the other half of MotU, at least in terms of album tracks. I'm totally behind them playing Detonate and the title track, but I'd have preferred Conspire to Deceive, Our Channel to the Darkness, Between Directions, Forever Astray, A Death that Becomes Us and especially The Burning Point, which is the best song on the album. I'm also a tiny wee bit sad that of all the songs on DotL, they chose to drop The Most Alone, which might not be the best complete song on that record, but for my money, its solo is the best, most quintessentially Gothenburg MDM moment on the whole album.

The setlist qualms are really just nitpicks, the songs they did play were fantastic and they played the hell out of them, the whole vibe was joyous. Well worth the price of admission, would see again in a heartbeat.

I know what you mean about the 'wall of noise'. Some bands have been doing that these days. When I saw DT maybe 5 or 6 years ago, that's how they sounded as well. Saw them a few months ago in the same venue and was much more distinct. I guess I get what they are going for with the sonic wall, but I prefer being able to hear everything clearly.

Listened to DotL in full for the first time in a while today. Conditional still the best song they've released, 10/10, Jesper is still the king when he wants to be. Gateways also an outstanding track.

Conversely, less appreciative of Last of our Kind. Heafy's vocals just don't work on this one at all, and the vocal mixing is amateurish. Fortunately he only appears at the end of the song, but it still kinda ruins it for me.

Production in general is definitely better on MotU. Mikael's vocals in particular are mixed far better than on the debut.

I actually like Last of our Kind, and the Heafy parts. I find it creative and interesting. I also like Mikael's vocals on that one, since it sounds different as well.
And I like the intro with the other instruments. The main guitar riff is a different style too.
Would have liked to see more guest appearances and trying some outside of the box approach.
