The Happening

Agreed, I've gone in to every one of his movies with no expectations, and always enjoyed what he was selling me.

(Even if the ending to The Village was rather weak, I still less-than-three Bryce Dallas Howard)

The Village *was* a tad weak, and was loosely based on a true story about a religious compound/ community that scared the citizens, who were completely isolated...
regardless, I think the movie itself was great.... It was dark, scary, nice artistic angles and atmosphere... sometimes that alone is enough to be an enjoyable
movie... (although, the ending did suck)

Signs was GREAT! I really loved that one.

I've gone to every single one of his abortions of movies and figured out the ending within the first 15 minutes. Honestly, his movies could be about 2 hours shorter and still get the same point across, without that bullshit he likes to call "psychological horror" and "puzzle"...

His goal with each movie is to write an obvious ending, and at the point where the audience member guesses the ending, usually sometime between the turn off your cell phone video and the lobby advertisement, try to confuse them into thinking they're wrong by throwing in the most random horseshit that he can think of, and then lead you in to the obvious ending.

well, I'll let you know if it's good or not when I come back tonight...

Eric: I agree with what you said *somewhat* if it only reflects the Village... but I don't think Signs was "obvious" at all...
I did not see Lady in the Water so I can't talk about that one...

Oh man, I thought Signs was terribly predictable. The second the whole "loss of faith" was brought in, I new that the ending of the movie was going to focus on the rekindling of his faith with god by some terribly written divine intervention (the asthma attack in this case)...

I'm still pissed at the sixth sense, I was so excited for that, but then the day before it came out when I watched the trailer and I let the words "I see dead people" hit my head a little too hard, my young self figured that shit right the fuck out... "Holy shit, Bruce Willis is dead..."

Still went and saw it just in case that wasn't going to happen, but... it did.

Edit: Haven't seen Lady in the water either... I gave up on him after The Village.

Well, I aplogize my movie-IQ is not as developed maybe (....) but i enjoyed the Sixth sense, and I loved Signs, and The Village: as much as it may have been predictable: just think how you were entertained while watching the movie... (at least I was)
I often tend to watch movies that I know the ending, or guess they may suck, just for the art aspects and the great shots/ atmosphere...
(which explains my HUGE horror film collection/ gore/ crazy weird foreign movies I have..)
When you watch a good ol' zombie movie, surly you know the ending right?
but it doesn't make it less enjoyable.

If you go in knowing the movie will suck , then realizing that at the end won't be a twist.

I don't know what to expect to be honest ... I stay away from online-synopsis websites,
I stay away from promo-videos (only go by what's on TV)
I like to give myself the element of surprise with anything... (why do you think I never download Mp3s of cds before they come out? )

well dunno bout Shmylalyan movies, but you yanks have ALOT of trailers that pretty much show the entire movie.

which is exactly why I stay away from them!!

The only trailer I've seen of The Happening was the one with people jumping/ flying from the top of a building, and some mysterious conversations...

Im seriously going tonight with 0 expectations

oh yeah well if I had done that I might want to see it haha.

I watched the several minute preview that was posted online complete with an intro with Shyamarama saying THIS MOVIE IS THE SCARIEST EVER OH MY GOODNESS etc, and then the acting was so laughably bad.

So THEN I got excited because I saw the redband trailer which had a bunch of cool deaths. This peaked my curiosity so I decided to look up reviews which mentioned each death in the film, and it just so happens they already covered all except 1 or 2 more in the trailers. WAY TO RUIN IT PREVIEWS

Well, I love Zombie films because they're just that, Zombie Films... the story isn't supposed to matter at all so I can ignore that. All that matters is how much gore and tits can you fit in a film in 20 minutes. Granted, I won't say ALL zombie films are like that, A few have good stories (28 days later comes to mind, although its more of a Viral Outbreak movie, but that still counts).

When it comes to M Night's abortions on the other hand, the story is the for front. He is supposed to be writing Psychological Thriller, a genre that is very very very hard to do. Very few writers can do it right. And he just doesn't have the chops to manage a story in that genre in my eyes...

When there are movies that exist like Jacob's Ladder, The Machinist, American Psycho, Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Cube, etc. etc. etc., I can't help but feel underwhelmed by M Night's bland and predictable story telling.
