The Importance Of Lyrics- Thread

Of course lyrics are important. I wouldn't appreciate bands like Opeth, Mastodon or Pain Of Salvation the same way if they didn't have those incredible lyrics of theirs.

Ah Opeth!!!!

What Simon said about the voice being an instrument in black metal.
I think his voice is phenomenal then makes me shiver and want to listen so much. Though I don't feel this is all the lyrics, maybe in part but also about the deliverance and who is singing them.

Yeah Akerfeldt's vocals can bring a shiver to the spine, especially live

i have to admit that i like to read Amon Amarth's lyrics because somehow i like the whole Norse mythology-thing.
but still, i don't play Hermod's Ride To Hel because i want to hear the story about Hermod going all the way to Hel to ask for the release of his brother, Balder.

maybe i shouldn't have said that '' i couldn't care less about lyrics''. i really like Carach Angren's lyrics because their 2 albums are both concept albums and both albums tell a different story and it fits very well with the music.

FOURTY-FOUR CALIBER BRAIN SURGERYYYYYYYYYYY

Dammit, you beat me to it.

As for lyrics, it all depends on my mood at the time. Sometimes I'll just be like "I really want to listen to something fast and heavy." Or sometimes I'll go "I really wanna listen to ____ song because I love the subject that the song is about". It all depends on how the lyrics are presented.

"When the Wild Wind Blows" is a great example. It's about a great storm. A hurricane or something similiar. Here in Florida, that shit is a yearly threat. So I can relate to that, and it just enhances the song so much more.

"Bad" may also just refer to someone's taste as well. I remember there was a Chimera song off Resurrection I think, the only song from that one that was 9ish minutes, that I thought was fucking cool. The more I listened to it though, I came to realize that the song was about a dad who would rape his daughter, but one day the daughter fought back and killed him. Turned me right off that song. A friend of mine loved that song and said that he loves lyrics like that, so it depends on taste too.

There are other times that I couldn't give a damn about lyrics though. Those times being Aspid, as I can't understand russian  and SOME death metal songs. Amon Amarth and Death are great, but most At the Gates I can't understand for shit.

Lyrics are important, but it's all in the way that they are presented and what you take away from them.
