the most true statement of truth ever to be stated

Rust In Peace is the greatest.
Painkiller is the best.

I'm not following your logic at all, considering the context they the same.

'best' refers to musical competence. the difficuly of execution, the complexity of composition. it is a far more tangible term. greatest involves variables like creativity, popularity, musicality, icon status etc. and is harder to pin down. in reference to the 1970's hard rock pantheon. led zeppelin was the greatest, but either deep purple or queen was the best. I can't decide which.

then there is just the term Favorite. often when people are trying to say that they like something, they will use the words "best" or "greatest" when the thing they are describing is nothing of the sort. i.e. Metarrika is deh best metar band ever! FALSE! that person just likes them most.

I follow you logic Zehm. I use it all the time , except I use "Favorite" instead of best.

There's no way I could pick just one album to be the greatest metal album of the 1990s..

Simply because this is just a few of the great albums released in the 90s:

Megadeth - Rust In Peace
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Entombed - Left Hand Path
Metallica - Metallica (Can't believe nobody's mentioned this)
Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
Sepultura - Arise
Mayhem - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Death - Human
Morbid Angel - Blessed Are the Sick
Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
Coroner - Mental Vortex
Pantera - Vulgar Display Of Power
Cynic - Focus
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Carcass - Heartwork
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul
