The new Candlemass is kicking my ass...

I swear to goat, this album is fantastic - powerful, riff-laden doom-fucking-metal from the masters. Messiah's vocals are stunning, the riffs crush and the whole record sounds fantastic. There's even a riff that's pretty much a direct reference to 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' in the album, and the instrumental interlude 'The Man Who Fell From The Sky' has got an awesomely hypnotic groove.

Let me ask something, is this really doom? To me this is not 'doom' per se, this is plain ol' epic true heavy metal. And of course most 'epic true heavy metal' bands get labelled 'power metal' for some reason and therefore dismissed before they've even left the starting line....

Put it this way, if the new Candlemass is doom, then so is Manilla Road. Alternatively, "Heaven and Hell" is not really a doom record, or is it?

I'm torn between Nightfall and Tales of Creation.

One of the first two. But if I had never heard the older albums until now or had nostalgic connections to them, the new album could have been a contender.

If Black Sabbath were the first 'real' heavy metal band, and they are classified as 'doom' as well, surely 'doom metal' and 'true epic heavy metal' are, in some instances, fairly interchangeable terms?

JK - Very true, but I'd say Candlemass sound a lot 'doom'ier than latter-day Sabbath did. I can totally see where you're coming from about 'true epic heavy metal' getting confused with Euro-widdly-power-trash though, that shit just ain't right.

Messiah's shit is super-tight on this new one - the chorus to 'Seven Silver Keys' has a vocal hook that will require exploratory surgery to remove from my head.

Yeah, Seven Silver Keys and Copernicus are my favourites at the moment as well, although I have a feeling that 'Spellbreaker' could work it's way to the top spot given time...

Tales' version of Under the Oak is waaaaaaaay better and the live version of Solitude is infinitely greater than the original studio version.
