The News Thread

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/a...neo-nazis_fine_people_heres_proof_139815.html

News anchors and pundits have repeated lies about Donald Trump and race so often that some of these narratives seem true, even to Americans who embrace the fruits of the president’s policies. The most pernicious and pervasive of these lies is the “Charlottesville Hoax,” the fake-news fabrication that he described the neo-Nazis who rallied in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017 as “fine people.”

tbh I even believed the "very fine people" misquote for a year because of misleading video clips. But it was more of a positive than a negative; I thought he was basically saying "non-violent neo-Nazis are fine people" rather than "non-violent non-Nazis at ralies where neo-Nazis may also be are fine people", the former of which would have been one of the most daring defenses of free expression of any Western politician in history. The latter was still good too though.

The Illinois Prosecutors Bar Association ...

"The Illinois Prosecutors Bar Association serves as the voice for nearly 1,000 front line prosecutors across the State who work tirelessly towards the pursuit of justice. The events of the past few days regarding the Cook County State’s Attorney’s handling of the Jussie Smollett case is not condoned by the IPBA, nor is it representative of the honest ethical work prosecutors provide to the citizens of the State of Illinois on a daily basis.

The manner in which this case was dismissed was abnormal and unfamiliar to those who practice law in criminal courthouses across the State. Prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges alike do not recognize the arrangement Mr. Smollett received. Even more problematic, the State’s Attorney and her representatives have fundamentally misled the public on the law and circumstances surrounding the dismissal.

The public has the right to know the truth, and we set out to do that here."

I'm enjoying this meme that he's just a misguided but harmless guy who deserves more pity and help than he does condemnation and scorn. They're already formulating the core of a full-on apologia.

Kim Foxx: "I've decided not to pursue charges against Jussie Smollett."

Far-right: "This is bullshit, he's getting special treatment."

William Barr: "I've decided not to pursue charges against the Trump administration."

Far-right: "Total exoneration!"

One difference among a hundred is that numerous sources detail the extent and evidence of Smollett's crime. Mueller's full report isn't available yet, but it does clear Trump on the question of collusion, which was always the real question, not obstruction of justice which may amount to a few threatening tweets. Unless you believe that Mueller was compromised by Trump/t3h ruskies.

The evidence against Smollett is all based on hearsay, mainly the brothers he hired. Don't get me wrong, I think Smollett is guilty of staging a false attack; but I think it's telling that so many on the far-right are ready to accept Barr's judgment without any further questioning.

It's really the same kind of situation. If we're going to be suspicious in one case, it makes sense to be suspicious in the other.

That, and you know, physical evidence found in their apartment, security camera footage, phone records, and common sense regarding targeted assaults at 2AM in a Chicago winter.

I think the brief summary by Barr is intentional to bait Dems into doubling down and looking even more foolish in the future. There's a reason why the MSM is now largely deemphasizing the whole Mueller investigation and moving back to medical care and idpol.

All of which requires explanation. As evidence, it doesn't explain itself. It requires the brothers' testimony. Which could be a lie, although I don't believe that.

Well, the MSM is hardly the lodestone of legal accuracy. Trump's guilty of something. If I'm confident Jussie Smollett's guilty, then I'm as confident that Trump's guilty.

And besides, Barr's not the most trustworthy judge when it comes to powers of the president.

"Far-right" :lol:

I debated over what category to say. It's impossible to lump everyone into just one. I picked what I thought would be a less objectionable term.
