The old Metallica is back?

that pic is so good i still cant get over it! ;p One think i never worked out in photoshop is how to pull out part of an image so that you get no background crap. Hows that done? E.g. say you had a bacon sandwich with a table in the background, is there a way that you can auto cut it out of the pic? Or do you have to cut manually? So that you literally take the bacon sandwich and pop it into the cockpit.

Also, do you do any clever blending to make it look like it actually is there? Shadows and stuff perhaps? When i have tried simple tasks in PS it nearly always looks crud.

Probably sounds unclear lol. What the hell, im a photoshop nub!

I find the best way is to zoom in and with a small eraser, say 5pxls, and manually erase round the object you want to cut out. Then delete the background. If you just try to select the background with the magic wand tool will always leave in rogue pixels around the object you are trying to cut out. It takes longer this way but you get the cleanest results.

You *could* do this, but it's tedious and not undo-able.

Pen tool/paths and Layer masks are far superior in flexibility and speed ...

No man, it's just the most basic stuff in photoshop!

It's just all about getting the right contrast, sharpness and colour between objects in the foreground and background, and then making sure light sources and shadows are as consistent as possible. It's amazing what you can do with the layer styles function (i.e. 'overlay', soft 'light' etc). I usually always put a very feint layer of a solid colour (like a yellow one in my last picture) over the top of everything once a piece is finished, and set the layer style to 'colour' and maybe around 15% opacity.

But seriously, the hue-saturation-colour and brightness-contrast functions, as well as the layer styles are amazing and can do so, so much. They're my 5150, tubescreamer and SM57 of photoshop haha

ahh...I totally see what you are talking about, I've used those functions myself ...not for pictures but for bands logo's(Skinless mostly) and other things. The shadowing, opacity layers, gradients....Thanks dude for sharing. :kickass:

PS...F@*k Metallica

Photoshop elements doesn't have layer masks I don't think - I'm not shelling out £600 for the full photoshop CS3 which is the price it seems to be online!

I'll also be honest and say I've never had any training or someone to show me anything on photoshop - just kinda figured out bits and bobs myself! So I can only advise how I do stuff, not the best way to actually do it. I should probably learn how to use it properly...

Sorry for hijacking this thread by the way. (no terrorist pun intended)

i have been listening to the Iron maiden song covered by Metallica. Not sure when it was recorded. But the guitar tones for the intro were similar to AJFA. Love it man!

If Max Cavalera can still sounds as brutal as ever, I am sure James can pull something off.

I don't agree with that though. I think Max sounds like he's lazy now. He used to sound pissed and badass. Now he sounds like he just has to do the show to get his paycheck. I'm not talking about his guitar playing, which has become nonsense (barely playing the riffs).

This guy used to be my hero...
