What was the original kick drum, and how did he/you arrive at the final product?

And before shit gets flung around about sampling/triggering/Tea Boy... I really do think that Andy's kick samp is absofuckinglutely PERFECT.

I've only used it once and the eq I put on it looked like something from the Winter Olympics ski jump competition. It might be perfect if you've got lots of double bass work, but it was awful for the song I used it for - you wouldn't even think it was the same sample to hear it on the final track!

That's exactly where it excels at, and what it was meant to be used for: downtuned heavy metal with lots of double kicks. It's perfect for that "type-writer" kick drum sound.

I do say that if you're doing something groovy like Meshuggah, it wouldn't be the ideal kick either.

Thanks, Andy.

In terms of post treatment, can you share any general parameters about eq/comp/etc ?

No matter how hard I try to "Sneap" any of the kicks in DFHS (DW primarily) I can't get it to sound like yours... I'm sure a lot of people have a hard time with them as well, hence why so many of us use your kick samp!! =)

Yah.. that was my point. No matter how hard I try to get a DFHS kick sounding really bad ass, Andys always sounds/works better.

Haha yeah. I find I'm digging the stuff I like in person most out of the DFHS stuff, as well, like the big powerbell ride, the snare, the crashes, etc...

They don't have any 24" kicks, and that's my favorite size. I need to pick up drumagog so I don't have to waste as much resource on running a seperate midi track triggering Battery in addition to DFHS (Replace kick 100%, snare 50/50), though.

to get a natural dry kick (such as the dw dfhs kick) like andy's I had to compress it quite a bit, using the compression to accent the attack (the skin/beater sound) and get rid of the floor noise/decay. Then pretty heavy eqing.

I actually used a frequency analysis plugin (with the 60-band e.q thingy)
And as I suspected the usual areas had to be boosted and cut on the dfhs kick to get it close to andy's.

60-80hz usually boosted
160-300hz usually cut quite a bit
400-900 usually another dip in here
2-4k sometimes a smallish boost around here
7-10k quite a bit of boosting in this area (adding the lovely click)

those are just rough guides but I've noticed similar treatment in most mixed kicks I've been lucky enough to look at.
