Regarding t-shirts I think less is more most of the time. Either just a logo or a logo and a simple picture. The girle shirts are usually much more tasteful than the male ones.

Basically i buy all my metal clothes online since there's nothing resembling a metal store where i live, except for this summer though when i went to Stockholm. I found a kickass store on Sankt Eriksgatan called Repulsive Records, been there?
