The Problem With Modernity

His science was strictly empirical, not metaphysical, meaning it was a study of matter and not of patterns.

Humanity's lost.

Uh, well the reason philosophy isn't synonynous with science and math is because those fields are limited to what can be proven and/or tested. There is a shitload of important fundamental questions which science and math aren't going to help us at all in answering. What kind of mathematical formula are you going to use to describe what is moral and immoral, for example?

You're talking about the difference between pure philosophy and applied math. Applied philosophy is also limited to what can be proven since that's it's main concern - but the mathematical and philosophical methods are all based on the same use and manipulation of a priori knowledge, except that mathematicians have developed a less verbose way of doing this.

Humanity's lost.

:bah: everything that has happened and is happening now, and will happen, is exactly the way it is supposed to happen. i imagine that's why you're such a negative nancy.

but yes, i think that many are too caught up in numbers. "well, evidence shows that...blah blah blah blah...so caught up in ____

Yoda is posting on the board! Wow. So what is my cruel fate master?

omg omg omg...i posted like yoda...and i didn't even try

Methinks you're under the spell of bad movies and books; or your wonderful sense of humor isnt entirely apparent at first blush.

I mean, this is perhaps the funniest statement Ive ever read on this board:

thats a truth that i must remind myself of in order to escape my harsh judgment of infoterror, or for that matter, anyone, including myself.

concerning the notion of humanity's being lost, that is a judgment coming from the mouth of one person (infoterror) who sees deeply into the motivations of mankind. i love reading his posts but often hate his negative apoctolyptic prophecies, but love them too, as they come hand-in-hand with the spreading of his knowledge.

that sums of my stance on modernity. there is no real problem. thanks to modernity, we have a much larger window of communication and awareness than man has ever had, which has broadened our world view, all at the cost of what we have created, which in turn provides us with more to bitch about. perhaps if i wasn't so cynical, i would take a stance of action myself. until then, i will just negate every opinion that i cross, passing it off as silly, including my own.

Such silliness--there being no problems. I dare say, you're sillier than infoterror.

don't get me wrong, i know there are problems, but trying to some up all of the problems and calling it "the problem" is silly. it sounds like you are referring to the grand scheme of things, which transcends being in a state of anythingness that can be labeled. kick it down a notch, referring to the problem of modernity, which is a product of humanity, which is the only "ity" on earth (as far as we know) that can communicate the idea of such a problem, its safe to say that everything we do is the problem, including our efforts of good intention.

which leads me to my opinion of "the problem." as humans, we are very caught up in what we do. we are bombarded with emotions, doubts, joys, passions, all of which are products of themselves in a push-pull chain of events. we are too busy to just sit back and smell the roses, to take in the essence of life. we are so driven to go..go..go..go..everything that is being stated in this thread IS "the problem". it will remain that way until all humans are gone...or until an epic disaster wipes out all but the monestaries.

The funny thing is I agree with you. There's such an orgy of everything now, and everything is so interconnected; well, its hard to even know what the problems really are.

Yet, I see problems. Real problems, not imaginary philosophical ones. I suppose thats the one big difference with infoterror: his problems are not philosophical, but rather socio-cultural and political. And i think the same way, but from a different yet very similar perspective.

well, no matter what route philosophy-in-general travels, our situation's problems will still arive at the same nature of the problems that we see. concerning my preference of which route to follow, it is definetely the latter of your proposed choices. whatever anyone's choice is, its merely thanks to their aesthetical preference. some even like to give it and take it both ways.
