These guys must have spent more than just a little time with those early Black Sabbath albums. Very enjoyable indeed.:notworthy

GREAT GREAT band......
It's a shame that it has taken them a few years to shake off the Guitar Hero stigma, as it seems like they are now gaining cred again in the underground circles.
All their releases are top notch.

Sure, these guys aren't life long metalheads by any stretch of the imagination, and don't pretend to be.
They are indeed hipsters turned metalheads, but they are great at what they do.

You've mentioned a few times in the past that those guys came from the indie rock scene, and while I have no idea if that's true or not, you seriously can't assume they never liked metal before and just decided to like it in 2005 to form The Sword, right? I mean, you CAN like other styles of music AND metal at the same time, without making a metal band. Who knows, maybe they are lifelong metalheads (although, that's not really a compliment or anything so I can sort of understand why they'd be ashamed to say that in public) haha

Jason always seems to have an issue with certain bands not being "true metal." I don't seem to get it as why is it you can only like one genre.

Yeah, I love the Sword too. Age of Winters was an album I played like crazy when it first came out. And each subsequent release shows more and more maturity in their sound. As much as I played and obsessed over Age of Winters...I think Warp Riders is still their most complete and solid release. It also contains my favorite Sword track "Lawless Lands".

I have no issue with it whatsoever..........
How the hell could anyone interpret that from what I said?
I only brought it up because when they first came out, people slammed them because members were in the indie rock band the Peabodys (I think that was their name, if I recall correctly).....
I always liked them since they first came out.

I don't care at all where a band came from.
I like many genres beyond metal as well.

I only have an issue with bands who market themselves differently to go with the times.

My main gripe would be all the metalcore / Ozzfest (IE - Victory, Ferret, etc, etc) bands, who went from Warped to Ozzfest overnight to go with the times. The labels though are just as much to blame.

Yep. Of course.
I started out with Kiss / Cheap Trick / Rush, Pink Floyd etc...

Then metal for the majority of the 80s.
At the end of the 80s through the late 90s, I was primarily into punk and hardcore, and explored various related sub genres (IE - Industrial, New Wave, indie, alternative, etc, etc).....

In the late 90s is when I started getting back into metal primarily from going to Milwaukee Metalfest the year they added a touring punk fest.

Anyhow, the main point is that during the 90s, I was in an indie / emo band, as well as two punk bands. Now that I started playing again a couple years back I have been in metal bands.

So yes, it is certainly possible the guys in the Sword grew up in metal.

Bottom line is I could not care less because I like their music. Period.

No, but clearly you do have an issue with it because you've been bringing it up literally every time you talk about the sword. I just typed in "Sword" and "Jasonic" in the forum search and literally each returned result has you mentioning them with the qualification that the members may not have come from metal. I'm not trying to be offensive or anything because clearly you like the band, but I don't get why it's an issue at all? TONS of metal bands didn't come from metal. Off the top of my head, Metallica, Suffocation, Voivod, Deceased, etc all came from punk and hc before playing metal metal.

Ok, I may have "mentioned" that fact, but certainly never an implication that I can not like them because of it.

I mention it because that is a VERY common criticism of the Sword, esp in the COTD scene.....

searching under "jasonic" and "doom" and "manilla road" will crash servers. Why do you think Netflix went down on Christmas Eve.

Curious....what did Deceased and Voivod start as? I know Deceased were always a death metal band. King has always had an interest in punk but I dont think he was ever in a true punk band. Crossover maybe.

Voivod as well.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.......
Yes, Mark Shelton definitely owes me some royalty payments.
Novembers Doom as well.......

As far as VoiVod goes, I mean, all I can say is that I know when still alive Piggy always mentioned that he was more into classic prog, mainly Pink Floyd, than metal. Not sure a band like VV is a good example, considering they were definitely more innovators than followers.

It's not what they started as, but those guys in interviews from the early days all said thy were into punk and stuff, and their first few albums weren't as metal as the later ones. Suffocation, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Motorhead guys were all punks before they started metal bands. Nobody complained about how they're not "lifetime metal fans". I'm actually not criticizing Jasonic either, if anything I'm just criticizing how stupid metal fan mentality is. Makes me hate metal even more to be honest.

oh...feel free to insult him. It is always funny. Yeah, lots of these guys were into other music...I wouldnt call them punks. You dont see pics of Lars with a mowhawk on the net or anything. I know lots of people who are metal musicians who dont really listen to lots of metal.

I think Jason's beef is more with bands that suddenly change styles to fit with the next trend and then will do it again at the drop of a hat when the next trend hits. Almost just being a product of the "man" than a artist of sorts.

I get that, and like I said, I wasn't referring to him, but rather the people he refers to that hate on The Sword because of what they were playing before they even formed the band.

When The Sword put out their debut album, alot of people ridiculed them for ripping off Sleep (in fact, I had a good friend at the time that liked to call Age Of Winters "My First Sleep Album"), and for that I get. I mean, I was of the same mind at the time to be honest. It took me a while for me to realize that The Sword was more about hooky, catchy jams and not so much the overly long songs that Sleep was known for. But, other than The Sword really, there was nobody else doing that style. Alot of the major labels like Roadrunner were afraid to sign them in spite of being huge into them. It took another 5 years for similar bands to crop up and now that style is relatively popular.

It's all good. I certainly wasnt taking your comments as a personal attack.
I know you are speaking in general, as was I, which is why I wasn't sure why you looked up "Jasonic" and "The Sword"
I too was speaking in general about constant backlash they have received.

Once again though, I don't think you can really compare modern bands to bands from over 20 years ago, as bands like VoiVod and Metallica were innovative and certainly took influences from punk and other genres. Bands like the Sword are anything BUT innovative and are truly just paying tribute to older genres, not building anything new on top of it, if that makes sense....
