This may not be the right place for this, but I just want some quick info.

First, what the hell is a "hub" and what will it enable me to do?

Secondly, what's the UM one like and where can I get it from - also do I need any particular capabilities to be able to have it?

thanks

wintermute.sublevels.net usually has more people in it. This is the second UM hub. Other good hubs include:
doom-metal.deathnap.com
neoclassical.no-ip.org

OK, I've downloaded the DC++ thing, and registered on the forum, but I just don't know what to do now! (a search was not very productive)

How do I get music basically???

I have oDC, not DC++, so I'm not sure just how similar they are. Go to 'File - Public Hubs' and then type in the hub you want where it says Manual Connect Address.

Or add those hubs to your favourites, click on the one you want to connect to and click on "connect".

well I've registered at the forum, but when I try to connect to somewhere like that Paladin hub it disconnects me saying I'm not registered, when I am clearly logged in in another window.

:(

you have to register seperately on the paladins register. the forums are a seperate registration to the HUB

a hub is totally different to a forum.

go to the above paladins link, click it and get the hub ip address.

then go to your direct connect client, open it and add the hub to favourites (the little gold star icon on the top right hand tool bar)

make the description something like "UM Hub @ Paladins" or something.

add the username and password you receive once you have registered. (all these details will be obvious once you are in the "add favourite window")

if you need more detail, ill get home later tonight and post a better reply that is one a step by step basis.

btw, go easy on the n00bs. everyone has a similar problem when they are first learning something. :)

where do i fing the IP? or if someone could type it here that would be great

Oh OK I got the IP, but it's still disconnecting me! If someone could just do a step-by-step thing that would be useful, to lots of people by the sounds of it.

As far as I can see I am registered on paladin.sublevels.net/board already, and it keeps telling me I have to bloody register!!!!

Which window do you mean? The forum one? I am already signed in there. This is what the DC++ thing says when I try connecting...

<Hub-Security> This hub is running version 0.7.14 of Open DC Hub.
Private message from Hub: Sorry, only registered users are allowed on this hub. Go to http://paladin.sublevels.net/board/ to register.
*** Disconnected

1. Download dc++ at http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/

2. Register at http://paladin.sublevels.net/board/

3. Add paladin.sublevels.net to your favourites and fill in relevant information

4. Connect to the hub and read the rules; for example, if your connection is DSL/Cable/T1/T3 you need at least 2 slots open for people to download from you for every hub that you are connected to. If your connection is 56k you only need one slot per hub. Click on settings (it's one of the icons, I can't recall which one) and fill in your username/connection details/etc and in settings you can also set where you want downloads/unfinished downloads to go (which folder, I mean). Once you've made sure you're not breaking any rules (which will result in a kick and a 10 minute ban) just play around with it until you're familiar with the setup. It's not really very complicated.
