the USA thread -

A more disturbing and largely ignored similarity lies in the wholesale privatization of the US government's authority and functions, which has blurred the line between public good and personal gain.
Over time public power becomes powerless and private power becomes paramount -
Hopefully things will change for the better. (After the next regime change.) :p

I´d rather keep my hopes down, Elephants and donkeys seems to be almost the same thing in the land of the free. And with the current party system the possibilities for other parties to gain any power seems to be quite small...

I totally agree. The U.S. would probably work best if it wasn't "winner takes all" in terms of election, like Israel or Germany. I usually throw away my vote, voting for the other guy, aka the third party.

A slang term for vagina.
So today I learned the origins of this word. I assume you too consulted urbandictionary.com, and I see that it is derived from a Hawaiian word -- yet everyone I know spells it "poonanny" and has no idea of its legitimate spelling. In fact, I've heard "pootnanny" and "poontang" as well. And I'd say the most common version is simply "poon." Are these really all derived from punani? Interesting.

And thus ends today's English lesson, kiddos.

Rome(then), USA(today) aka Is the US making the same mistakes as Rome?
Comparisons of America and Rome are everywhere these days, whether deploring an over-extended military, social decadence, or illegal immigration.

The Romans never had a ruler nearly as dumb as Bush and his neo-cons. There were structural contradictions built into the Roman Empire that in the long run made its collapse/decline inevitable whereas Iraq was a war of choice. That's not to say the American empire doesn't have its share of contradictions, but things are falling apart at the particular moment (now) that they are more because of Iraq than because of those contradictions.

Nero burned Rome just so he could rebuild it. Imagine Bush would try to burn Washington or New York. That would be a lot of fun.

Gaius (Caligula)

-Married his Sister, whom he believed to be "Hera".
-Thought he was "Zeus" and demanded to be worshipped as such.
-Made his horse a Senator.
-Got his horse a human wife.
-Held enforced orgies with all of the senators' wives.
-Dressed up as a "heroine" in "entertainments" with naked boys.

I had read the word spelled that way before, so I didn't need to consult sources to post that it meant "vagina". Later I looked it up on Wikipedia because I remembered (from conversations with you, although this certainly sounds ambiguous) there being more to it than that. In fact, I figured poonanny to be a related word with similar - but not identical - meaning. I'm sure you can guess what anatomical part I thought it was meant to indicate. Yet I found no trace of the variation or its alleged meaning, and I was convincing myself I had heard/read you wrong at some point.

I thought it had something to do with those collectable panani-cards.. oh well. Norse that I am, I lack street-credibility in the 'hood anyway

I find the difference between your view on the european union and the USA quite strange. I agree fully with your stance on the EU, but do you really think the policies of the USA, the single superpower on earth, are directed by that man alone and his cronies? Granted, he seems to be a bit on the illiterate side of things, but it´s either just to make people underestimate him, or he´s just basicly a puppet (I strongly lean towards option nr. 2).

Even if the war in Iraq might be unfortunate for the USA as a whole, there are groups of people that make an enourmous profit out of oil and rebuilding contracts, adding to that we´ve got the arments industry, who make millions for every helicoter that crashes. These people are the ones that are pulling the ropes when it comes to US foreign policy, and it does not matter for them if the taxpayers think it´s a bad idea to occupy another country, much less what the Iraqis think.

There´s loads of nasty words to say about the current US regime, but dumb isn´t one of them.

small OT -

@rahvin: i had no idea that you were being serious

@taliesin: these collectible cards are called panini from the name of the first firm that produced them, and they traditionally represent footballers, not vaginas. :p

Oh, right.. well, I vote for a collection of porn stars, then! Collect them all and find out who hid the banana, and where!

I work with architects all day long.

I already am.

And RE: poon, this could actually turn into a fun "Hey, lets show our friends across the ocean our funny slang," type of thread.

~kov.

 :p .

Ah well I saw it as punanny when some classmates did a presentation about hip-hop culture in the US, so it's hip-hop slang apparently:rolleyes: .

@Rhavin: Oh yes I will drop my carreer just because you say so, the day Italians know how to speak English well  .
