The X Factor is a good album, though when I first heard it I wasn't convinced. Definitely one which gets better with repeated listening and time I think.
Virtual XI was much more accessible for me when it came out and I thought it was an improvement on The X Factor, Blaze's vocals were definitely stronger anyway. There are some dodgy moments though, Nicko's drumming is uninspiring and sounds like he's going through the motions in comparison to his excellent work on BNW and the lyrics are questionable on a few songs.... When Two Worlds Collide is pretty woeful. Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger isn't a bad song but I agree Maiden can sometimes go a bit overboard on the choruses and kill a decent idea through sheer repetition.
Virtual XI is home to one of my all time favourite Maiden tracks, The Clansman, but also The Angel and the Gambler, a song which I actually used to skip most times I listened to the album, which with Maiden is something I rarely do.... except maybe with half the tracks on Fear of the Dark!
Brave New World kicks arse on both Maiden albums featuring Blaze by a long way though... sorry Blaze! I appreciated you gave it a red hot go but for me Bruce is the voice of Maiden and always will be.
