Well, some 7 years after its release i think i finally really dig this album. I remember being so keen to get it back in 95, and ultimately being dissapointed with it. I think maybe cos' ive been in a bit of a negative funk lately i was more in tune with the mood of the album and it struck a chord with me.

I actually think if Steve had of let a REAL producer into the studio it might have been one of Maidens finest records. The energy in Blaze's singing and the bands playing is great. Sound wise, i love the bass & drums, nicko's bass drum for instance is not as audible as say on BNW, its further back in the mix, but it is really punchy (which is how it should be) and i like where Steve's bass sound is at. Overall the mix is really good, my only complaint is that the rythm guitars seem a bit muted, like there is no 'bite' to them. Other than that single improvement to the actual sound, a REAL producer would have picked up the flaws where Blaze's voice and the music were not happening.....oh well, what could have been eh?

There are no weak songs, but for me the best part of the album is once the first 4 songs have finished, i.e. Look For The Truth onwards is the best stuff. Dont get me wrong, i like the first 4 tracks....but i just like the rest of the tracks more.

I also think the band made a mistake leaving Judgement Day and Live My Way off the album, they are WAY too good for b-sides, and would have given the album a better balance between the prog stuff and straight forward rockers.

Anyways, Steve Harris always said it takes a while to get into it, and i guess i finally have.

So, despite some flaws...... X Factor :headbang:

I agree, production wise it could have been a lot better, but the songs are very worthy indeed :)

The moment I heard "Standing alone in the wind and rain" I loved it, and loved Blaze's voice.

TXF has been one of my favourite Maiden albums for a long time. I didn't get into it right away, but I loved the feel of the album since first listen. I had shivers down my spine the first time I heard the chants at the start, and then Blaze's vocals, and the instrumental part in the middle of SOTC!

I don't mind the production of the album, and if anything I think a darker, and less Maiden-esque sound would have been what would have made the album a classic. It was very experimental for them, but I think they should have taken even more of a risk with it, and given it a darker edge. I think adding more punch and bite to the guitars could have ruined it, I like the damp moody sound.

It is so ironic that Bruce has said he left the group because of their comic-book style, and not writing serious material, and then the first album they do when he's gone is just that, down to the cover art. Maiden at their best, and they should write more stuff like it.

I feel The X Factor will be the last time we'll ever see Maiden really trying for something new.

I think the soft parts are too soft, I hate having to turn it up to hear Blaze, then turning it down when the band kicks in.

Awesome album though, always loved it, was the first Maiden album I bought, despite having liked them for many years prior.....

X Factor is an unusual album, importantly completely different to ALL the prior Maiden albums. I like it quite a lot, new direction etc. It's not just Blaze's voice etc the whole feel, specifically the depressive darkness, "evil of war" type themes to the songs was a great change to the blahness of NPFTD.

I always saw this album as somewhat experimental and regardless of production quality etc (no biggie really it's not THAT bad), a bold step in a new direction and it stands up on its own merits. Boldly go where no Maiden has gone before...lol

I think VXI is the result Steve was after with this album, however you can see snippets of really great stuff, at least 3 or 4 songs on this album are outstanding if you ignore one or two minor faults. Sign of the Cross is an absolutely awesome song, closely followed by 2 am.

I believe a lot of people where dark on Maiden after NPFTD and because this album was a little different (I respect the bold new direction) they just dizzed it as shit etc without taking the time to absorb it properly.

I liked XF from the moment I first heard it, which surprised me because I didn't expect to.

There are, however, three weak points on the album:

- Judgement of Heaven (ducks punches from Sydo)
- Production
- Lyrics

As Dave/Tough As Steel said, an objective producer could have fixed some of this and maybe persuaded Steve to write some less clumsy sounding words. I agree about Judgement Day, BTW. That song is FAR too good to relegate to a mere B-side!

Some of the ideas in the lyrics are great. It's just the words themselves I'm not too fond of. Steve doesn't seem to be interested in writing verses than scan properly anymore, and some of those jar with the points he's trying to put across. It's the main problem I have with the last three Maiden albums, XF being the worst offender.
