I'm interested in the snare sample that Romesh from Longwave seems to use. I've heard it on the last Funeral For A Friend record and on a live session he did for Rocksound magazine.

Makes an appearance about 3:10 on this video

Sounds like it could be Slate, but I'm not sure. Anyone got a sample that sounds like that or does anyone know what sample that is? Cheers

I've fucking loved that snare sound since I heard it on the latest FFAF album. Afraid I have no idea where it originates from but I would LOVE to get that sound.

It's one of those snare sounds that seems to work well on a bunch of stuff. Reckon it's a few snares blended together. Part of me thinks it's Snare 7 blended with something else, but it's a beast of a sound.

was speaking to Romesh from Longwave regarding this thread and he had this to say...

'Those songs you are talking about were all recorded in the same room
but if you listen carefully, they aren't the same snare. You're just hearing the same room maybe. Room is a big part of my sound.'

'I guess those snares sound a little similar but that is probably more down to the way I EQ, and the area i like the snares to live in. They are different sounds though if you listen closely. and all those songs are done in the same room haha. anyway, i dont post on there, but that's cool, say hello from me'

He's such a nice guy as well. Gonna have to study those sounds as they sound pretty similar. Cheers for the info.

My secret for getting a tone like that, again its a secret, Snare 22, Green Snare, CJ Wall Snare, mild compression, Stereo Hall verb (love CSR for this), then allow the snare to compress the drums buss comp and the master bus a tad. Instant ambient room, great sound.

I love Funeral and his sound, especially the Snares!!!
I was sold after the first hit...

A very important thing:
The drummer hits like a BEAR, even live the snare sounds insane.

Shoot Romesh a mail too and he told me SSL comp on snare(hardware)(160 on kick), imo...

Talking FFaF, btw...

just a question, when you say Room sound you meam from the room mics right? for me the room mics always make a too roomy sound, and when you squash it with a 1176 it just pumps..

i though that compressing the shit of the room mics was what normally goes for this genre.. but the dude said most of the sound is room sound. so i got a bit vonfused..

The thing that gets me about it, is that the snare( wouldn't be so clear in the live sessions room mic as they would in the studio sessions. There must be some sort of sample blending in there.. or he's a genius! :D

Sampled. Come on guys, There is no way you can get a room sound to be that clear on just the snare and not have the cymbals screaming loud let alone all the other instruments in the room. It's a really nice sound but it's sampled. I suspect he is talking about getting that sound out of the room mics during sound check to make the sample and then uses it when mixing this project.

Romesh was the first beta tester for my first publicly released sample pack way back when. Really talented guy, I'm happy for his success.

Cheers,
Steven

Whilst in sure he uses samples as well he may also have tracked cymbals separate to shells or done the old crank the snare into a pa trick.

This sounds indeed pretty close! Thanks!

Hello!

I got a heads up I was being discussed here so thought I would quickly drop a message!

I spend a hell of a long time drum tuning, anyone who works with me will tell you that!

I will sometimes mix in a hit of the same snare underneath for consistency. But never replacing anything. It is still the real kit you hear. There would be no point me spending so long tuning if I was going to replace them.

Room is a big part of it, it provides a bulk of the decay sound and makes the hits sound a bit more consistent. There are ways of lessening that horrible cymbal wash in room mics. If anyone says that room mics are just full of cymbals, maybe you haven't used a good room. If you use a great room, you can usually get a pretty balanced sound in the room mics if you place them right.

I will also put mics in odd places (facing the floor, behind doors) etc to see if you can get some cool tones that add something to the sound.

I tend to love Emporer X snare heads on my sessions.

I love compressors with some "pop" to them that I will use for compression, SSL, distressors, 1176, 160, all capable of this!

Hope that helps.

Cheers!
Romesh
