Bereits in den frühen Neunzigern begannen die Amis von THOLUS zu lärmen, auch damals war man schon ordentlich technisch unterwegs, gönnte sich dann eine mehrjährige Auszeit, bevor man sich 2004 wieder neu formierte und anno 2007 endlich das Debütalbum "Constant" folgen lässt. Schon bei der Bezeichnung "Technical Death Metal", und erst recht beim Blick auf das Line-Up verhärtete sich mein musikalischer Ständer extrem: der Bandkopf, Drummer und Vokalist in einer Person, namentlich Dave Murray (nein, nicht der MAIDEN-Klampfer...) schart beachtliche zehn Mitmusiker um sich. Neben zwei Rhythmusklampfen, einer Lead-Gitarre, einem Bass gibt es auf "Constant" noch eine Lead Jazz Bass, einen Lead Metal Bass, Akustikgitarren sowie Sample- und Scream-Verantwortliche zu vermelden. Doch nach Genuss von "Constant" musste ich eine leichte Erschlaffung des musikalischen Ständers feststellen.
Im folgenden nun die Chronologie des Erschlaffens:
THOLUS agieren durchgängig auf einem erschreckend hohem musikalischen Niveau. Wie bei allen Brutalo-Frickel-Combos stellt sich auch bei THOLUS die Frage, inwieweit sie es schaffen, dass die eigene Virtuosität nicht zum Selbstzweck gerät. Eine gewisse Eingängigkeit ist auch bei solch komplexer Musik von Nöten; eine rohe Aneinaderreihung von technischen Kabinettsstücken mag einstweilen faszinieren, wenn es aber zu Lasten der Nachvollziehbarkeit geht, dann werden solche Bands nur noch von ambitionierten Musikern und Mathematikern gehört.
THOLUS drängen zunächst auch in diese Ecke, vor allem gegen Ende der CD kriegen die Amis noch die Kurve und hinterlassen nichts als rauchende Ohren und heulende Hobbymusiker. Denn was THOLUS rein musikalisch hier abliefern ist phänomenal und steht locker auf einer Stufe mit Veteranen wie CYNIC oder ATHEIST. Die Gitarristen geben sich in den Solo-Passagen keine Blöße, virtuos und experimentell quäkt der Jazz-Bass neben der "normalen" Bass-Arbeit daher (hört euch "Speculum Of The New Race" an!), immer wieder schießt einem der Name Roger Patterson durch den Schädel. Das Sahnehäubchen bildet das unmenschliche Drumming von Dave Murray: Beeindruckend einfallsreich, technisch erhaben, streckenweise jazzig (unglaublich vertrackt beim Ende von "Staring Black"). Doch gerade die Drums bremsen die Songs etwas aus und stören den Songfluss empfindlich. Gerade in der ersten Hälfte von "Constant" nehmen die Songs sehr schwer Fahrt auf: einige Breaks, Tempo- und Rhythmuswechsel weniger hätten den Songs streckenweise doch ganz gut getan. So faszinierend die untypischen Songstrukturen auch sind, umso schwieriger und anstrengender sind sie.
Geschwindigkeit und Hyper-Blasts sind garantiert nicht alles bei technisch-orientiertem Geprügel, aber wenn man ,wie bei den ersten fünf Songs geschehen, fast keinen einzigen Blast-Beat einschiebt, ist das auch ein Grund, warum die Songs schwer Fahrt aufnehmen. Das sie es anders können, beweisen THOLUS dann im folgenden: "Involuntary" beginnt als Inferno, wird dann vertrackt langsamer, um dann wieder anzuziehen und alles restlos in Schutt und Asche zu legen. Killer! Beim instrumentalen Titeltrack werden die düsteren Samples nur durch monoton-stampfende Gitarren unterbrochen.
THOLUS sind nicht so abgedreht und Grind-lastig wie die Sickos von PSYOPUS, nicht so temporeich wie die Frickel-Götter von CRYPTOPSY, nicht so eingängig wie DEATH, nicht so düster wie NILE, nicht so aggressiv wie CANNIBAL CORPSE – sind aber vom technischen Anspruchsdenken und der musikalischen Ausrichtung durchaus vergleichbar.
THOLUS können nicht ausnahmslos punkten, laden aber jederzeit zum aufmerksamen und befriedigendem Hörgenuss ein. Kurz gesagt: Wer bei NECROPHAGIST so richtig geil wird, ist hier an der richtigen Adresse!
Was bleibt als Fazit? Alleine wegen der instrumentale Leistung auf "Constant" bin ich gewillt eine hohe Benotung zu zücken, muss den Songs aber auch rudimentär mangelnde Zielstrebigkeit zugestehen. Gibt unterm Strich ne sehr starke 7, auch auf die Gefahr hin, dass ich mich, nachdem ich das Album komplett verstanden habe, grün und blau ärgern werde.
Anspieltipps: "Involuntary", "Staring Black" und "Ripe For The Killing".

Claustrofobico, soffocante, brutale e allo stesso tempo tecnico.
Questi gli aggettivi migliori per descrivere Constant, ottima uscita in ambito death metal.
Le otto tracce (più un'introduzione) non danno mai tregua all'ascoltatore, non gli danno mai punti di riferimento e lo catapultano in una realtà parallela. La batteria di Dave Murray non tiene lo stesso tempo per più di qualche secondo, e le chitarre - pesanti come macigni - si intrecciano a dovere tessendo trame davvero complicate, alternando passaggi thrash/death a svisate che toccano persino certo fusion jazz. La sfoggio di abilità strumentistiche non va qui condannato come tante volte accade, ma lodato perchè non fine a sé stesso, bensì parte di un progetto musicale di altissimo livello, innovativo e originale. Se questa è la strada del death metal tecnico, i Tholus hanno colto nel segno, alla pari di colleghi già affermati come Meshuggah o Strapping Young Lad. La registrazione perfetta permette di notare la bravura di ogni singolo componente della band e regala ai fruitori un suono poliedrico che in certi frangenti sa essere un muro come in altri risulta più ovattato.
I Tholus hanno il merito di appartenere alla famiglia di quei pochi gruppi non catalogabili sotto un'unica definizione: oltrepassano le barriere del death e della brutalità grazie a idee originali e a un tocco di follia compositiva che li porterà sicuramente lontano.

La prima cosa che balza allocchio leggendo le note informative di Constant (debut album dei deathsters californiani Tholus) è limpressionante line-up che ha collaborato alla registrazione di questo lavoro. Sono ben undici gli elementi che hanno prestato la voce o gli strumenti sul platter, cinque facenti parte effettivamente della band e sei guest.
Nonostante un simile spiegamento di forze, questo Constant è un lavoro piuttosto canonico, realizzato senza dubbio con tutta laccuratezza degli esperti mestieranti ma distante da quello stupefacente progressive-death influenzato dalla musica jazz riportato nella biografia.
Il lavoro è senza dubbio molto tecnico e le doti esecutive della band sono impressionanti, ma non aspettatevi grosse variazioni sul tema. Lalbum riflette alla perfezione la scuola tecnica tipica del death a stelle e strisce, con brani aggressivi e complessi introdotti da samples elettronici e spezzati da alcune aperture melodiche (ma nulla al di fuori dei canonici arpeggi o rallentamenti), prima testimonianza di una band che sul versante formale non ha alcuna sbavatura ma che al momento è ancora troppo debitrice alla lezione impartita da Carcass, Morbid Angel, Death del periodo mediano e soprattutto Nocturnus E ciò che manca è proprio la fantasia compositiva di questi mostri sacri, saccheggiati ma non eguagliati.
Congediamoci dai Tholus con una sufficienza stiracchiata in forza della grande competenza ma crediamo che solo i die-hard fan del genere potranno trovare Constant di proprio interesse.

Muchas veces, cuando una banda edita su disco debut (al igual que cuando un director de cine filma su primera película, por ejemplo) se nota bastante. En el fondo hay que verlo con un poco de complicidad y comprensión y esperar que en el futuro pulan esos pequeños defectos para grabar álbumes cada vez más redondos. Por el momento, estos californianos (en estructura un quinteto, que además ha contado con la ayuda de más músicos para las guitarras) tendrán que tomar buena nota del que ha sido su principal lastre en la confección de esta obra: la producción.
En el estilo que practican, un Death Metal progresivo al 100%, para que la ardua labor de los músicos sea disfrutada necesita imperiosamente un sonido pulcro, transparente y perfeccionista; especialmente hoy en día, que los avances lo permiten. Sin embargo no ha sido así, no se sabe si es porque ellos lo han querido o porque el productor y los ingenieros de sonido nunca llegaron a entender cómo tenían que sonar estas canciones. Al parecer fueron hasta cuatro personas las que trabajaron encargándose del sonido en este álbum, entre los diferentes instrumentos y las mezclas, todo para que el resultado final sea un tanto extraño, confuso e incluso en algún momento puntual no demasiado mejor que una maqueta de las que están bien grabadas. Si es que el mundo está mal repartido: en ocasiones la gente se queja del sonido demasiado cristalino y artificial de muchas bandas (sobre todo discos grabados en países escandinavos y Polonia), que para estos Tholus podría venir como anillo al dedo.
Por lo que respecta a la música propiamente dicha, lo que ofrece esta gente son ocho canciones y una intro, más o menos largas pero tampoco de duración excesiva. Lo que es evidente es que no es un disco de fácil escucha ni mucho menos. Se trata de uno de esos álbumes complejos, con giros inesperados que necesitan una atención paciente y varias oportunidades para poder entrar en la cabeza del oyente. La etiqueta de “progressive” no es un farol. Esta gente trabaja las estructuras de las canciones, casi laberínticas, con idas y venidas y por supuesto cambios inesperados. Sin duda todos los instrumentos están bien tocados (ojo a la manera de lucirse de este bajista, que parece sacado de una escuela de Jazz), teniendo en cuenta además la dificultad que entraña este estilo. Lástima, una vez más, de la producción que atenúa el complejo engranaje del grupo.
Lo mejor que pueden hacer de cara al futuro es confiar en sus posibilidades, seguir componiendo igual, seguir tocando igual… pero encargarse de que todo suene de una manera diferente.

So fitting it is that the label’s first release in four years, and second overall, is Tholus’s Constant – a tech death platter that recalls the heaviness of Death, Necrophagist, and Gorguts, the finesse of early ‘90s outfits Cynic and Atheist, and the complexity of every unit previously mentioned. Perhaps needless to say, Constant is a good debut that admittedly has the potential to perplex and consequently alienate those who can’t or don’t care to grasp such intricacy. After all, it seems one must work to enjoy this.
Immediately noticeable is Tholus’s affinity for the cosmos, a la Mithras, though the former are more taken with Mars than any other extraterrestrial body. Like the concepts explored within the lyrics, the music of Constant is dense and demanding, requiring concentrated effort to comprehend exactly what’s going on. Dave Murray, who doubles as the everyman growler, is a veritable virtuoso in the drum department, but like Brann Dailor of Mastodon, he would benefit from taking it easy now and then instead of filling songs with as many beats as possible. In fact, some claim that this record is instrumental overkill, that the songs are just too busy. It’s an understandable complaint. It’s fun to marvel at musicianship sometimes, however, and maybe that’s part of this band’s appeal. Still, much of ‘Short Forevers’ isn’t necessarily overloaded – similar to a few others – although ‘Expropriated (The Brooking’s Report),’ ‘Staring Back,’ and ‘Involuntary’ could stand to be simplified, in spite of their eviscerating, redeeming moments. The title track is also formidable once it actually gets up and running.
Again, technical death fiends should obviously check out Constant as it’s a monster of a record in several regards. While the musicianship is supreme, Tholus’s songwriting could use revaluation to a certain extent, which is primarily what prevents yours truly from declaring this a masterpiece. This sets Goregorecords on track as a label to watch, though, with hope for a buy or die follow-up.

It’s fun to marvel at musicianship sometimes, however, and maybe that’s part of this band’s appeal. Still, much of ‘Short Forevers’ isn’t necessarily overloaded – similar to a few others – although ‘Expropriated (The Brooking’s Report),’ ‘Staring Back,’ and ‘Involuntary’ could stand to be simplified, in spite of their eviscerating, redeeming moments. The title track is also formidable once it actually gets up and running.
Again, technical death fiends should obviously check out Constant as it’s a monster of a record in several regards. While the musicianship is supreme, Tholus’s songwriting could use revaluation to a certain extent, which is primarily what prevents yours truly from declaring this a masterpiece. This sets Goregorecords on track as a label to watch, though, with hope for a buy or die follow-up.

Was die Mannen um Bandkopf Dave Murray, seines Zeichens Session-Drummer bei allem was irgendwie abseitig ist, hier an den Tag bringen, ist nicht innerhalb der ersten Versuche zu fassen. Man sieht sich von Beginn an mit a-rhythmischen Breaks, psychedelischen Harmonien und auch todesmetallischen Klängen ausgesetzt, wie sie von Bands wie ATHEIST verwendet wurden. Dass so ein einzelner Song für sich alleine schon knappe 5 Tonnen auf die Waage bringen dürfte, versteht sich von selbst.
Insgesamt sind hier 11 Musiker am Werk, die die unterschiedlichsten Aufgaben haben. So finden sich auf ''Constant'' immer wieder Phasen, die von einem Jazz-Bass dominiert werden, aber auch einen weiblichen Stimmpart, der nur für gesprochenes oder geschrienes zuständig ist. Alles sehr eigenwillig, aber auch extrem interessant. Wenn dann noch die Harmonielehre von Herrn Zappa auftritt, ist das avantgardistische Meisterwerk seiner Vollendung nahe.
Fügt man das bisher geschriebene zu einem Gesamtbild zusammen, so stellt sich die Frage, ob das technisch überhaupt umzusetzen ist? Wer sich Songs wie ''Involuntary'' oder ''Ripe For The Killing'' anhört, dem wird klar, dass hier sehr versierte Musiker am Werke sind, die leider nicht immer durch den richtigen Sound unterstützt werden, denn an einigen Ecken hakt es ein wenig mit der klaren Frequenzabgrenzung, die bei so einer Musik dringend nötig wäre.
Wer sich traut THOLUS auf ihrer Reise durch die Unendlichkeit des musikalischen Schaffens zu begleiten, der wird mit ''Constant'' wahrlich nicht enttäuscht werden. Es gehört zwar eine gehörige Portion Ausdauer dazu, die CD nicht nach dem ersten Eindruck in die Ecke zu stellen, aber hat man seinen inneren Schweinehund überwunden, so erfährt man hier seltsames bis seltenes.
Trotzdem muss ich leider aufgrund der äußerst schweren Eingängigkeit und der leichten Soundmängel den einen oder anderen Punkt abrechen.

Spesso in campo death metal alcuni gruppi sono stati definiti come "macellai" (in senso buono), volendo indicare in loro band capaci di distruggere e macellare appunto i padiglioni auricolari degli ascoltatori con serie impressionanti di grugniti, riff trita-ossa e ritmiche di batteria a dir poco indiavolate, pensate per esempio ai Cannibal Corpse o ai primi Death. I Tholus invece, piuttosto che triturare le nostre orecchie, preferiscono far impazzire il nostro cervello con un intricatissimo e schizzatissimo progressive death metal dalle chiare influenze Death e Carcass. Tra serie incessanti di riff, assoli davvero pregevoli, ritmiche "assurde" ed influenze jazz, i Nostri intrattengono l'ascoltatore per tre quarti d'ora con un concept spaziale del quale però non so molto a causa della scarsita di informazioni del promo in mio possesso.
Fin qui sembrano tutte rose e fiori, tuttavia spesso la band di Dave Murray (omonimo del componente degli Iron Maiden) rischia di uscire dai canoni della forma canzone, impedendo all'ascoltatore di orientarsi nell'interminabile sequenza di elementi che sopraggiungono alla propria testa. E proprio qui sta il punto, croce e delizia di questo sotto-genere, le partiture intricate dei Tholus faranno la felicità di chi rimpiange la scomparsa di Chuck Schuldiner e la disperazione dei deathster che ricercano unicamente un massacro sonoro privo di fronzoli.

Aber auch NECROPHAGIST sind nicht einfach. Denn nur wer sich die Zeit für THOLUS nimmt und tiefer in dieses Killer-Album eindringt, begreift erst dessen Größe. So werden gefühlte tausend Riffs während der 45 Minuten verbraucht, die das Ereignis "Constant" andauert. Dazwischen lockern Sprachsamples das Geschehen auf. Und immer wieder diese Gitarren, selbst jazzige Elemente sind in den einzelnen Songs zu finden. Daraus ergibt sich eine weitere Parallele zu NECROPHAGIST: Durch den verschwenderischen Einsatz aller Instrumente bleibt die Growl-Stimme fast im Hintergrund, fällt kaum noch ins Gewicht. Das aber ist kein Vorwurf, sondern eine Feststellung: Vollbringen Gitarren, Bass und Schlagzeug so einen genial anmutenden Totentanz, braucht es fast keiner Stimme mehr. Zum Schluss sei auf den Titeltrack von "Constant" und die folgenden Gewaltorgie verwiesen. Das fast sanft beginnende Stück mündet in ein tödliches Riffing voller Midtempo-Gewalt, dessen Energie fast magisch in den Nacken schlägt. Death Metal bandet Tholus har efter mange års kamp endelig sendt deres debutalbum ”Constant” på gaden igennem Goregorecords, som er et underselskab til Aural Music. Tholus spiller ambitiøst teknisk dødsmetal i et moderat til tungt tempo; meget inspireret af dødsmetal fra midten af 90’erne.
Thouls blev startet i starten af 1990’erne, hvor de blandede death metal i stil med Carcass og Death med fusions elementer fra Frank Zappa og Chick Corea. De forsvandt i glemslen, og blev i 2004 gendannet af det originale medlem Mike Johnson. Det ender dog med, at det er trommeslageren Dave Murray, der presser projektet igennem med det resultat, at bandet endeligt fik deres musik udgivet i 2007.
På ”Constant” er der ud over grundkærnen i bandet, en lang række gæste musikere, der bl.a. tæller instrumenter som lead guitar, lead Jazz bass, lead metal bass, akustisk guitar og voice samples. Det er på mange punkter et rigtig interessant album, med mange små detaljer af stor teknisk sværhedsgrad: trommeslageren blander dødsmetal rytmer med fusions ting, resten af bandet inklusive sangeren er mere rendyrket dødsmetal. Alt det bliver krydret af de forskellige gæste musikere, hvor leadguitaristen Kevin Kmetz leverer nogle meget markante jazzinspirerede guitar soloer.
Det er alt i alt et ret godt debutalbum, Tholus har sendt på gaden; ikke noget revolutionerende med ikke desto mindre interessant.

Dopo anni di underground, scioglimenti e rimpasti, i Tholus pubblicano per la giovane sottoetichetta di Aural Music il loro debutto, “Constant”, un disco ferocemente tecnico, schiacciante e meditato, che prende le mosse dai Carcass del periodo “Necroticism” – tanto nel riffing quanto in dettagli quali i campionamenti – e lo ispessisce oltre ogni limite con un’attitudine che si rifà alle tendenze progressive/fusion dei primi ’90.
La tendenza a lussureggianti solismi – anche di basso fretless talvolta – non è tuttavia l’elemento che più si fa notare, essendo il cardine dell’opera un suono compresso e sempre teso dal dominio assoluto di una magnificente batteria in superbo e costante movimento, che destabilizza, o meglio trasla senza soluzione di continuità, gli equilibri ritmici.
Il limite essenziale di “Constant”, probabilmente aggravato dalla lunga e difficile lavorazione, è insito nel sovraccarico stesso dell’elemento ritmico, che permette solo sporadicamente un vero gioco di tensione e rilascio, e comprime mostruosamente le tracce nel loro complesso, inibendo la fantasia compositiva e sottolineando solo alcune caratteristiche, e non sempre le migliori, come l’asfissiante brutalità e l`evidente ispirazione carcassiana, che per quanto declinata secondo un linguaggio diverso rimane molto forte. E’ probabile, e ce lo auguriamo, che una maggiore stabilità e le conseguenti libertà e serenità compositive possano portare i Tholus ben oltre gli spunti interessanti che già offrono.

Out of the furnace comes the hard-tempered result: a challenging but confident piece of American experimentalism.
The most important characteristics of Tholus’s sound are the devastating, crushing heaviness of rolling guitar riffs, and the serious unconventional drum style. Closing track “Speculum of the New Race”, with its decidedly jazzy intro, puts the drumming into context- what works so well for jazz makes for uneasy and unique listening in death metal. Sometimes the rhythmic and temporal chaos is almost overwhelming, for example in the middle of “Short Forevers”, but Tholus have an eerie knack for judging the moment at which the listener’s head is about to explode, and can quickly bring all the layers of their highly technical pandemonium into coherency once more. Supernova guitar solos are used both to tie disparate sections together and to simply dazzle the listener with their overblown scope.
A dedication to technical and chaotic weirdness can result in some moments of disjointedness; “Expropriated (The Brooking’s Report)” loses the momentum it needs to snap necks because of the way its intricacy is laboured. However, the band have flashes of true inspiration, especially on the excellent “Staring Back”, which manages to combine all the crazy layers in which Tholus delight, and still have a wickedly crunchy flow. This fluid, aggressive track is where the Carcass influence shines through clearest, with the lead riff evoking “Buried Dreams” from that band’s “Heartwork” album.
The imagery on “Constant” centres around space missions, government conspiracies and the truth beyond the stars, and on many of the tracks on offer here the sheer brutality of the classic USDM sound blended with a visionary and highly ambitious technicality could really be from another planet. At times it is questionable whether the alien aural chaos of the sound is truly enjoyable to listen to, but to a large extent that is a question of personal taste- if you take pleasure from technical, tricksy death metal then this will no doubt thrill you to your planetary core.

Supernova guitar solos are used both to tie disparate sections together and to simply dazzle the listener with their overblown scope.
A dedication to technical and chaotic weirdness can result in some moments of disjointedness; “Expropriated (The Brooking’s Report)” loses the momentum it needs to snap necks because of the way its intricacy is laboured. However, the band have flashes of true inspiration, especially on the excellent “Staring Back”, which manages to combine all the crazy layers in which Tholus delight, and still have a wickedly crunchy flow. This fluid, aggressive track is where the Carcass influence shines through clearest, with the lead riff evoking “Buried Dreams” from that band’s “Heartwork” album.
The imagery on “Constant” centres around space missions, government conspiracies and the truth beyond the stars, and on many of the tracks on offer here the sheer brutality of the classic USDM sound blended with a visionary and highly ambitious technicality could really be from another planet. At times it is questionable whether the alien aural chaos of the sound is truly enjoyable to listen to, but to a large extent that is a question of personal taste- if you take pleasure from technical, tricksy death metal then this will no doubt thrill you to your planetary core.

Tholus is a technical death metal band out of California, although instead of the relentless blasting style most newer bands use, the band primarily uses a mid-paced Death-like attack that is heavy on the jazzy/proggy influences. Despite being around since the early 90's, Constant is their lone full-length, and it kind of shows. That's not to say that Constant is a bad release, it's just rough around the edges and shows a band yet to find their own unique voice.
Among contemporary bands, Tholus is most easily compared to Gorod with their similarly jazzy take on the genre, though Tholus has a much less melodic approach. There is a heavy reliance on chugging off-time guitar work that brings to mind Theory In Practice and the occasional solo lends itself to the band's admitted love for Death. The majority of the album has a mid-paced kind of feel though occasionally, like in "Involuntary" for example, the band incorporates more speed and it really helps to inject some much needed energy to the album. The guitars are consistently impressive, but drummer Dave Murray is easily the star of the show with his constantly shifting, jazz inspired drum work. He lays down some ridiculously complex patterns and switches things around so much that it sometimes become too much to wrap the noggin around. For the most part, however, his contributions keep the songs active and interesting when the riffing starts to get a little tedious.
In the future, I'd really like to see Tholus to continue on the path they are on and maybe inject a little more speed into their mix. While the vocals aren't particularly horrible, they could use a little work as well both in terms of diversity and placement. The lower-midrange growls can get a little monotonous and sometimes it seems as though vocalist Aaron Ortiz just starts spouting out lines with no concern for the music it accompanies.
As for now, Tholus is a very talented band that unfortunately spent almost a decade pushed to the backburner. Now that it appears the band is active, I look forward to hearing where the future takes them because once they get more time together as a band to feel each other out, they have more than enough raw talent to make big time waves in today's scene.

Keine Partymusik oder ein kurzweiliges Intermezzo erwartet den mutigen Käufer dieser Platte, sondern ein Kopfhöreralbum der interessantesten Sorte.
In den frühen 90er Jahren wurde THOLUS gegründet, es wurde heiter vor sich hin musiziert. Wenig später legte man die Band auf Eis um erst 2004 ihre Auferstehung geschehen zu lassen. Dieses Jahr dann endlich und überfällig das Debütwerk – ein Urknall. Elf brilliante Musiker sind an "Constant" beteiligt gewesen. Genauso vielfältig erklingt diese CD auch. Kritiker könnten behaupten solche Musik sei lediglich anstrengend und ohne wirkliche Songs. Kann ich durchaus nachvollziehen. Aber Fans von weiter oben genannten Bands werden ihre helle Freude daran haben. Tausend Breaks, technisch versierte Musiker, Samples, jazzige Instrumentierung (Bass und Schlagzeug), eigenwillige Strukturen - immer unterstützt durch einen effektiven, differenzierten Sound – erfordern Ausdauer vom Hörer. Um die Platte ansatzweise zu erfassen, sollte man sich nacheinander die Stücke "Involuntary" und "Constant" anhören. Mich hat seit der letzten NECROPHAGIST CD kein technisch ausgerichtetes Death Metal Album so sehr in Verzückung gebracht wie THOLUS. Die Musik zu beschreiben ist annähernd so schwer wie diese Platte gänzlich zu durchblicken. THOLUS haben sicher kein Album für die Charts oder gar eine große Fangruppe geschrieben. Si javais chroniqué cet album en temps et en heure, je lui aurais certainement mis un petit 10,5 et lui aurait reproché dêtre insipide et de très maladroitement tenter de suivre les traces des groupes de death technique dil y a une quinzaine dannées en y incluant quelques pincées de riffs à la CARCASS. Finalement pourtant, après lavoir réécouté régulièrement au cours de ces deux derniers mois, il me semble beaucoup plus sympathique et pas si maladroit que ça.
En fouinant un peu sur le site de Dave Murray, le producteur-batteur-vocaliste du projet THOLUS (au passage, rien à voir avec le jovial guitariste de MAIDEN), on peut constater que loin davoir été balancé à la va-vite, « Constant » a été longuement élaboré et a nécessité le concours de onze musiciens (basse jazz, samples, solistes guitare entre autres). Encore une fois, tout ce travail nest pas évident de prime abord et pourtant il faut admettre quaprès sêtre donné la peine de se plonger dans « Constant », ses structures chaotiques prennent un sens. Parfois même cette tempête de sable martienne de death métal technique et inspiré (cest ainsi que ses géniteurs décrivent lalbum) nous ramène à cette époque où CARCASS changeait la face du death metal avec les monuments que sont « Necroticism » et « Heartwork ». Mike Johnson, responsable de la partie musicale dans THOLUS avant que Dave Murray ne prenne le relais, nest ainsi pas avare de plans carcassiens tant en terme de lourdeur sur le titre éponyme quen terme de blasts caractéristiques ou samples de monologues, et ne rechigne pas à aller chercher linspiration du côté des cadavres canniboules.
Il en résulte une atmosphère familière et étrange à la fois, parce que chaque titre est un mélange dinfluences et de travail personnel, un énorme chaudron dans lequel Johnson fait sa tambouille et assaisonne à sa convenance. Le jeu de batterie très vivant est lélément principal du groupe et lui confère cette apparente dimension chaotique, qui dissimule en partie la redondance de quelques riffs et fait oublier les grognements sans âme qui tiennent lieux de vocaux, le gros point faible de lalbum. Malgré cela, THOLUS parvient à maintenir une attention soutenue grâce à un gros travail de composition qui pourra rappeler à certains moments un EDGE OF SANITY plus complexe et moins mélodique. Il est évident que le groupe se ravitaille dans les années 90, celles qui lont vu naître, et il ne sen tire finalement pas si mal. Fidèle à lalliance death technique/thèmes spatiaux souvent déjà employée par le passé, son patronyme fait référence à de petits reliefs martiens, dorigine volcanique pour la plupart, qui lui donne ce côté intellectuel inhérent à la scène.
Pour résumer, THOLUS est avant tout destiné aux fans de death plutôt technique préférant la subtilité et la complexité des groupes des années 90 à lextrême brutalité des formations actuelles telles ORIGIN.

Los americanos Tholus bajo el sello de Goregore Records (otro de los varios subsellos que lleva Aural Music) publican su álbum debut de larga duración: Constant en el 2007. Dentro de la vertiente más técnica del Death, Tholus se abre en la escena con melodías y armonías de lo más inusuales. Orbitando las guitarras desde un mero acompañamiento atmosférico hasta explosionarlas con riffs death, Tholus nos recuerdan por momentos a Carcass y a Cannibal Corpse, bandas que como ellos han afirmado, han ejercido una fuerte influencia sobre su música.Desde sus inicios en los noventa y entre sus más y sus menos en su objetivo por no hacer desaparecer la banda, finalmente consiguen llevar a buen puerto su ilusión por grabar el primer disco y de este modo, tras tres años de largo trabajo, nace: Constant. Las vocales a cargo de David Murray son graves, guturales, estruendorosas, armonizando perfectamente con los instrumentos; las voces no cantadas por parte de Aaron Ortiz (Dismboweler) forman parte del repertorio de Constant a lo largo de todos los temas, recitando frases existencialistas sobre el espacio y los extraterrestres, algo que creo que está de más, que le resta calidad al disco, aunque no originalidad. La producción está bien aunque no perfecta y la tecnicidad de la música hace de Constant un disco muy completo y bien estructurado. Eso sí, se encuentra entre la delgada linea que separa al pre-fabricado, sin llegar a esto último. Los sonidos son crujientes y ligeramente pesados pero sin aplastar y la batería poco saturada evita la gravidez típico de la vieja escuela. Las guitarras aparecen melódicas de forma puntual, casi todo el tiempo con riffs marcados y perfilados al milímetro. Constant como primer trabajo no está mal; tienen posibilidades para crear más y mejor material. De todo el disco Protocultures destaca sobre el resto como la más original y enérgica de todas y ahí es donde se ve que Tholus tiene algo bueno que ofrecer a los amantes del Death más técnico, aunque les falte carrera. Staring Black también es otro de los temas que hacen que el disco merezca la pena, donde las guitarras cobran protagonismo al máximo por encima de las vocales. Los redobles de Ripe for the Killing dan esta vez protagonismo a la batería y su estruendo queda más patente que en ninguna de las demás canciones; la guitarra es un continuo ir y venir de riffs átonos e inarmónicos... algo que es curioso escuchar. El tema que da título al disco: Constant es totalmente espacial, con una intro ambiental y coqueteos con el bajo distorsionado y la guitarra acústica; sobre los tres minutos pasa a la batería cañera, de ritmo especialmente marcado para luego decaer y convertirse de nuevo en ambiental y así sucesivamente; un tema prácticamente instrumental que llega a los ocho minutos. La última canción tiene toques de jazz en su inicio y lo mezclan con voces guturales, guitarras melódicas y ritmos Death. Para mi gusto las canciones son un poco largas. Con algunos minutos de menos, el disco hubiera estado mejor. Para aquellos que les guste lo experimental, ahí va: Constant.
