Wilkinson pickups

Would you say this is a good guitar to start out with, a nice on to have, or a good collectible?

Seems kinda like the Cort X series, cant see it being bad! Cheeky inlays, decent pickup config, no floyd, 24 frets. Im guessing this is a mega cheap guitar too?

I got it because it looked pretty decent and was only 130$, a guitar center was going out of business and everything was mega-cheap! I wanted to ask around since I'm not really familiar with that brand

I just checked their site. Could be ok for a throw around I guess. Cheap and basswood body makes me think it will sound cheap no matter what you do to it. Never heard of the brand of pickups and harware either. Hopefully they're reliable.

Ah, but don't forget all the JEM's are basswood; Steve Vai can't be wrong, and according to warmoth.com, "Basswood has a nice, growley, warm tone with good mids. A favorite tone wood for shredders in the 80s since its defined sound cuts through a mix well." Now agathis, on the other hand; THERE'S a shitty wood...

it all depends

there's a BIG difference between basswood in a cheap guitar, and basswood in something nice

i would agree tho that basswood has a bad rep, because a lot of cheap guitars are made from it & it is rather inconsistent when you look at nicer pieces v.s. cheaper ones...as opposed to mahogany where there's still a difference, but it's not nearly as vast IMO

I vote chesswood for shittiest wood. BC Rich is the KING of the shitty woods.

I may have gotten a lucky piece of wood then, but I actually like the tone in my LTD F255 and it is agathis with bass HZs. Granted, I have to boost the mids using the onboard eq, and we had to tame some mush out of the low end for the record, but live through a BDDI and a SVT, the bass holds its own against any live tone I've heard.

Edit: The only sound I've liked better is my F405, FWIW

i've heard a few people say agathis works well on basses, tho i've not played one myself...for guitars i can't stand it tho, it sounds like dead mahogany

Thanks guys, and if you want to hear something I recorded with it then go to www.myspace.com/Naragrum and listen to the song called "Naragrum", I recorded the whole thing with this guitar and a cheap FAB metal distortion

Looks like this find wasn't too bad
