Tip on BIG DRUM ROOM sounds from small pockets

This is two sm57's on the floor spaced pair over compressed and lots of lows and high end taken out with pultec style EQ, the reason they are on the floor is to pick up less cymbals and more of the shells + you get this sort of earthy natural tone. The only problem i'm having right now is that the snare is mostly in the left side because they are in spaced pair where the centre of the kit is kick so just play with the placement a bit, i haven't tryed XY yet but i plan on it next session! Mix it in with your samples a bit and you have real drum ambience! maybe even add a bit of a convulsion reverb to make it sound super huge!!

Cool! :) Never tried 57's like this.. it sounds a bit "whistly", but nothing a bit of eq won't fix, I suspect.

Try reversing the mics away from the kit to pick up more indirect, ambient sound from the room.

thats sa-weet i've gotta try that!!! 4 57's on the next drum session haha

Wicked, how big is the room?

its bigger then the average home studio but not huge, i think this concept will work in any room though because these mics were literally not even a meter from the drum kit. pointing at the kit.

Jesus! are those OH's or ambient mics up there in the clouds, so high! hahah. I like the M/S room mic setup idea you have in the center there... if that's what that is.

Nice. I want your mic stands.

hehe, the ultimate support mic stands are actually really affordable and really really awesome!

ahaha they aren't that high, plus thats what OH's are? ambient mics ahah trying to capture the sound of the drum set not just the cymbals and for the album we were doing that session for (folk) they are really like stereo snare mics. also the ones in the center are actually in blumlein not M/S, but it's hard to tell from the picture saw the cymbal felt trick on gearslutz. This is some of the unprocessed drums from the session, just close mics + 414 overheads and the fatheads in blumlein

If you want your snare and kick centered, try this:
