Since we are close to the new year, what are your top 10 picks for 2006?

1> Mercenary - Hours that Remain
2> Pyramaze - Legend of the Bone Carver
3> DragonLand - Astronomy
4> Adagio - Dominate ( Released middle of Dec'05, and stated '06 on their site, letting this slide as an '06)
5> FairyLand - The Fall of an Empire
6> Blind Guardian - A Twist in the Myth
7> Edguy - Rocket Ride
8> Steel Attack - Diabolic Symphony
9> Persefone - Core
10> Lordi - The Arockalypse (I don't care, I like this one. I'd rate them a little higher but that would probably be beyond blasphemy.)

If this were to go beyond 10 #11 Hammerfall - Threshold (What can I say, Natural High has grown on me). I'm sure I probably forgot something that was great.

Oh yeah, feel free to knock yourself out and go to 100 if you can remember that many that came out this year.

*edit* Big thanks to Glenn for providing that link to the list. I realized I made a greivous error and neglected to put in Bloodbound's Nosferatu. That would probably go in the #2 or #3 spot bumping off Lordi.

Rocket Ride is not the best Edguy CD, but then neither is Blind Guardian's A Twist in the Myth. I think they get on my list because there are a few good/decent songs on each CD that do carry the flavor of the bands to give the impression this is a CD by the respective band. I think fan loyalty also goes a long way. I'm not dissapointed in either of the bands, as the music is listenable, but replayable is another question. The better CDs of these bands, can be replayed ad naseum without getting tiresome, but I can see where it would be dissapointing. Still coming after ANATO and Hellfire Club, it's pretty hard to top those 2 and even ANATO had take some getting used to when comparing it to NiME. I think if Superheroes was also released in 2006 it would have taken the Rocket Ride spot as an Edguy offering. It's more obligitory as I can't say there is anything that Edguy does that I don't like.

*edit* btw, since we are talking about BG, they released a song called "Snakes of Destruction" for Revolver Magazine's Unit section. You can find it here http://www.revolvermag.com/theunit/index.html

My top 8 in no particular order:

  1. Into Eternity- The Scattering of Ashes
  2. Adagio- Dominate
  3. Lamb of God- Sacrament
  4. Scar Symmetry- Pitch Black Progress
  5. Poison Black- Lust stained despair
  6. Amorphis- Eclipse
  7. Mercenary- The hours that remain
  8. Threat Signal-Under Reprisal

I'm sure I'll have more to add later.

Bands I'm anticipating albums from:
  1. Sybreed
  2. Type O Negative (I'll always wait for a new album in the works or not...)
  3. Beyond Twilight (If this is out now let me know because I'm going to put it on my Xmas list!)

You're right, neither of the albums are their respective group's best. The difference, however, is that I consider Rocket Ride to be the *worst* Edguy album to date, and I was expecting something pretty good after Hellfire Club, whereas I was writing eulogies for Blind Guardian after Thomen's departure when A Twist in the Myth came out and completely kicked my ass.

And Snakes of Destruction, yeah, it's...interesting. :)

If you are talking about For the Love of Art and the Making, it is indeed out and IMO, easily their best album to date. Amazing stuff.

As of now, my list looks a little like this, though there could be some surprises coming along.

1) Vanden Plas - Christ.0
2) Thessera - Fooled Eyes
3) Beyond Twilight - For the Love of Art and the Making
4) Wastefall - Self Exile
5) Venturia - The New Kingdom
6) Mindflow - Mind Over Body
7) Mercenary - The Hours That Remain
8) Pyramaze - Legend of the Bonecarver
9) Circle II Circle - Burden of Truth
10) Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third

My favorite releases for this year.

1. EDGUY "Rocket Ride"
2. Bruce Dickenson "Tyranny of Souls"
3. Evergrey "Monday Morning Apocalypse"
4. Angra "Aurora Consurgens"
5. Circle II Circle "Burden of Truth"
6. Rage "Speak of the Dead"
7. Falconer "Northwind"
8. Firewind "Allegiance"

10. Dream Evil "United"

I buy A LOT of CD's every year and these always find thier way back in the cd player. I can't say enough about any and all of these releases. Obviously, some of you didn't care for the Edguy. I thought it was indeed a rocket ride. Very fun, energetic and still kicks major ass!!

WOW! I have and like most everything on your list, except I don't know
Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third. what's that like?

I'll play !!

#1 Vanden Plas - Christ Zero
#2 Mystic Prophecy - Savage Souls
#3 Wolverine - Still
#4 Red Circuit - Trance State
#5 Into Eternity - The Scattering Of Ashes
#6 Firewind - Allegiance
#7 Tomorrow's Eve - Mirror Of Creation 2, Genesis II
#8 Twilight Guardians - Sintrade
#9 Mercenary - The Hours That Remain
#10 Scar Symmetry - Pitch Block Progress

I had it in my mind that 06' hadn't been that good of a year in metal, but when I started throwing this quick list together I came across several that didn't make this list that very easily could have. Amorphis, Astral Doors, CIIC, Communic, Edguy, and others all had discs I really enjoyed.
