I'm still fairly new to metal, but so far, in no particular order.
Edge of Santity - Crimson
Disillusion - Back to the times of splendor
Green Carnation - Light of Day Day of Darkness
Death - The Sound of Perseverence
Orphaned Land - Mabool: The Story of the Three Sons of Seven
Green Carnation - A Blessing in Discuise
Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Opeth - Watershed
Nightingale - The Closing Chronicles

Communic - Conspiracy in Mind and Scar Symmetry - Holographic Universe come close to making this list.

bumped, this is a great thread
not in order of preference (apart from first 2):
Opeth - Still Life
Opeth - Blackwater Park
Dan Swano - Moontower
Between the buried and Me - Colors
Bloodbath - Nightmares Made Flesh
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
In Flames - The Jester Race
Opeth - My Arms Your Hearse
Edge of Sanity - When All Is Said
SikTh - Death Of A Dead Day

but it changes, as it does for most people
others that didnt quite make the list:
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet
Between The Buried and Me - Alaska
In Flames - Whoracle

I have to retry this list and become frustrated...again. My first attempt was pretty terrible. Order doesn't count, because that would make things beyond difficult.

1. Death's Design - Diabolical Masquerade
2. A Virgin and a Whore - Eternal Tears of Sorrow
3. When All is Said - Edge of Sanity
4. Moontower - Dan Swanö
5. Nightfall Overture - Nightingale
6. Blackwater Park - Opeth
7. Ghost Reveries - Opeth
8. The Wacken Carnage - Bloodbath
9. Above the Weeping World - Insomnium
10. The Black Waltz - Kalmah

Runner-ups:

Empiricism - Borknagar
Fear of a Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree
Eclipse - Amorphis
Heartwork - Carcass
Swansong - Carcass

Yes, I realize this isn't a top 15 albums thread, but I couldn't NOT include these.

I've listened to a lot of stuff since my last list, so I'll remake.

Amorphis - Tales From the Thousand Lakes
Disillusion - Back to Times of Splendor
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Green Carnation - Light of Day, Day of Darkness
Spiral Architect - A Sceptic's Universe
Garden of Shadows - Oracle Moon
Pan.Thy.Monium - Khaooohs & Kon-Fus-Ion
Orphaned Land - Mabool: The Story of the Three Sons of Seven
Persefone - Core
Suspyre - When Time Fades...

I hate this question :D

first off I need to think of what is regarded as metal... and the second stage to actually pick out a number of cd's that dominate all the others.

Therion - Theli
Savatage - "Streets" A Rock Opera
Ayreon - The Final Experiment
Cryhavoc - Pitch-black Blues
Unexpect - In a Flesh Aquarium
Rammstein - Herzeleid
Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine
Wuthering Heights - Far From The Madding Crowd
Jon Oliva's Pain - Maniacal Renderings
Falconer - Chapters from a Vale Forlorn

You win the most unorthodox list award in this thread, hands down. And a two thumbs up for listing a Savatage album, my friend's mom used to LOOOOOVE that band (I think she still does, I just haven't seen her in 10+ years).

1. Death's Design - Diabolical Masquerade
2. A Virgin and a Whore - Eternal Tears of Sorrow
3. When All is Said - Edge of Sanity
4. Moontower - Dan Swanö
5. Nightfall Overture - Nightingale
6. Blackwater Park - Opeth
7. Ghost Reveries - Opeth
8. The Wacken Carnage - Bloodbath

10. The Black Waltz - Kalmah

Runner-ups:

Empiricism - Borknagar
Fear of a Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree
Eclipse - Amorphis

Excellent choices!
Heartwork came today in the post, cant wait to give it a spin

I really need Empiricism too, Soul Sphere is a masterpiece of a song.

When All Is Said is a great choice for this list, it means you can count 3 albums as 1 :)

Tough one...

Opeth - Blackwater Park
Bloodbath - Ressurection Through Carnage
Opeth - My Arms Your Hearse
Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Opeth - Still Life
Behemoth - Demigod
Opeth - Watershed
Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down

Well, they might not be the 10 best metal albums, but they are my favourite ones. Just so you know, I didn't give it a lot of thinking so probably if I would've taken 3 more minutes on this comment it would've looked so different...

Yes, I am a big fan of Opeth and I highly recommend their music to all people that can relate to metal, if you peeps don't listen to Opeth already, that is.

impossible to make a list like this really, but of the top of my head, that's some of my most aprreciated and listened to CDs. I actually missed "Last Fair Deal Gone Down", its a brilliant brilliant album.
