I know this seems like a weird place for this type of thread but thought it might be fitting seeing as how Winds and AOS are both in my top 5.

1. Age Of Silence - Acceleration
2. Disillusion - Back To Times Of Splendor
3. Winds - Imaginary Direction Of Time
4. Rotting Christ - Sanctus Diavolos
5. Wintersun - Wintersun

Quite a strange list but I thoroughly enjoyed all these albums. :headbang:

Now I'm going to have to check those other bands out... damn you *shakes fist*

hmmm, imma make my own best albums of the year:

1. Winds - The Imaginary Direction of Time
2. Trans Siberian Orchestra - The Lost Christmas Eve
3. Kamelot - Epica
4. Kreator - Enemy Of God
5. Nightwish - Once

In no particular order:

Rush - Feedback
Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden
Cradle Of Filth - Nymphetamine
Nightwish - Once
Cryptopsy - None So Live

I agree with the first 3, but disagree on the last two. For 4 and 5 I would have put Vintersorg's The Focusing Blur, and Behemoth's Demigod. I am not particularly sure about the order, but who cares?

yea I would have to say those are very good as well. It is a tough year to make a list. So many killer albums have been released this year it will be tough to put together my Top 25 picks for the web site. Hopefully I will not leave any reeal good albums out.

Well, I already made a top 10 list for the Nevermore board, but I'm going to change it somewhat for this top 5 list (and if Ulver would have released Blood Inside, they would've been number 1, BUT NOOO). Here goes nothing:

1. Orphaned Land-Mabool
2. Ayreon-The Human Equation
3. Pain of Salvation-BE
4. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds-Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus
5. Winds-Imaginary Direction of Time

Winds would be the change. It was lower on my top 10 list, but gods, I've been listening to it again for the last few days, and the guitar work is simply beautiful.

Destroyer Of Orden: None so Live came out last year

1. Enslaved: Isa
2. Sear Bliss: Glory And Perdition
3. Bloodbath: Nightmares Made Flesh
4. My Dying Bride: Songs of Darkness, Words of Light
5. Decapitated: The Negation

I am seeing some good stuff from you guys. I didn't think many others felt that Disillusion was a top 5 record this year, like I did. The new Winds, Ayreon, Enslaved and Vintersorg records were all awesome. I just checked that Wintersun out a few days ago and it is fantastic.

My list goes something like this:

(no order)
Necrophagist
Disillusion
Behemoth
Visceral Bleeding
Vintersorg

Sorry, no Winds here. It is quite good though.

Cryptopsy - None So Live didn't come out this year either. That was like 2 years ago.

no particular order
bloodbath
vehemence
uhhhh new anata (i think that came out this year)
malevolent creation - warkult
amon amarth - fate of fucking norns

i really gotta keep up with what year it is... Kamelot came out in 2003 not this year :(

Wintersun - Jari Maenpo
After Forever - Invisible Circles
Age OF Silence - Acceleration
Amorphis - Far From The Sun

Just a few more to add... damn fine releases

1. Antestor-The Forsaken
2. Crimson Moonlight-Veil of Remembrance
3. Winds-The Imaginary Direction of Time
4. Borknagar-Epic
5. Arsis-A Celebration of Guilt

I thought 2004 was somewhat of an off year, compared to recent ones. So many great CDs hitting in early 2005.

(In no particular order)
-Peccatum: "Lost in Reverie"
-Winds: "The Imaginary Direction of Time"
-Woods of Ypres: "Pursuit of the Sun and Allure of the Earth"
-Age of Silence: "Acceleration"
-Borknagar: "Epic"
-Subterranean Masquerade: "Temporary Psychotic State," The Ulver material on the "UNO" soundtrack, the Submasq tribute song to Dead Can Dance, and the Agalloch-Nest split are all easily list worthy, but not full lengths

That list is pretty good. Moonlyght is an extremely good band. So is Illogicist. Some of those bands would never touch my top 200 list though (Cattle Decap, Fear Factory and a few others.)

Yea we all have different opinions but those are what did the most for me of what I heard over the past year. An interesting list to say the least, but filled with variety and many unexpected as you stated.
