Absolute best cd this year (or maybe ever!!!)....
Emperor-Prometheus:loco:

I'm also eagerly awaiting recieving the new Godgory cd and the new Krisiun cd (both on order)

Hmm... well, as it sits right now, the order would probably be:

1. Opeth - Blackwater Park
2. Katatonia - Last Fair Deal Gone Down
3. Devin Townsend - Terria

Past that... Emperor - Prometheus, Anathema - A Fine Day to Exit, Ulver - Perdition City, Tool - Lateralus, Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design, Hollenthon - With Vilest of Worms to Dwell, and Dimmu - PEM are all kinda kicking around my record collection, none of them completely sunk in yet.

As a side note, the best year for metal, like, EVER, had to be 1999. Look at some of the albums released that year:

Still Life, Scenes From a Memory, Hypocrisy's self-titled, Themes from William Blake, Infinity, Projector, Tonight's Decision, Judgement, IX Equilibrium, Colony, Tuonela, Burning Bridges, Oceanborn, Dreaming Neon Black, The Fragile, Testament's The Gathering, At the Heart of Winter, Mullmuzzler, Spiritual Black Dimensions, Pale Folklore, Kauan, The Light at the End of the World, Soulburner, Animatronic, Hatebreeder, Dead Hot and Ready...

Not to mention that Black Sabbath got back together that year...

for the most part, i agree with godisanatheist...

i have a huge amount of respect for radiohead, because they have proved beyond a shadow of doubt that they are a brilliant band. therefore, i appreciate any direction they go in.

of course, i don't consider amnesiac to be as good as ok computer...or the bends for that matter. still, it's a fine album...much better than what most bands are capable of.

i hate Radiohead!!!! the first band i wanted to see live, and now ive seen roughly 50 or more and no Radiohead!!!!! i like Amnesiac, but whats with everyone saying its better than Kid A. Kid A is great, Amnesiac is just plain good (by their standards).

I've got one that will sit on my throne for the rest of my life:

The new N'Sync album.

It's so dark, it's so atmospheric, you can find moments of tears and laughter, moments of wandering through the woods alone thinking about the facts of life, moments of profoundity.........oh god, what a masterpiece.
I must buy two, one for listening and one for pure worshiping, cos you know, you can never get tired of N'Sync.

1. Moonspell: Darkness And Hope
2. Tool: Lateralus
3. Opeth: Blackwater Park

I really think I don't have more albums that have come out this year...

Ah, some additions I didn't remember when I chose my initial top 5 albums of 2001. So, the bubbling under increases by these releases:

Diabolical Masquerade - Death's Design
Amorphis - Am Universum
Evensong - Mysterium (not the best they can do, but good nevertheless - eagerly awaiting new material!)
HIM - Deep Shadows and Brilliant Highlights (and now all the Finns here will consider me weird!)
Rakoth - Jabberworks

WOW  :OMG: someone that liked Amnesiac? you should be framed.

Hey, there's still a reason it was the last on my list! It's by no means perfect, but aren't Pyramid Song, Life In A Glasshouse and I Might Be Wrong some of the best stuff they've ever done?

I agree with crumbling mirth about how it compares to the rest though...then again, almost nothing comes close to OK Computer. Of course Opeth does and a little more. :D

1. Zyklon - World ov Worms
2. Sodom - M-16
3. Destruction - The Antichrist
4. Kreator - Violent Revolution

vortex - yeah, for sure :) ok computer just had to be a peak for radiohead. i mean how could they top it?

well The Bends was the peak, and they somehow topped it with Ok Computer. but they're both great albums, too hard to pick between them, not many albums have all the songs that are great.
